Do you think getting stoned adversly affects your programming ability?
Yes - It impairs your ability to think logically, and evaluate a series of solutions based upon their merits (assuming you find them, which goes back to the first problem). Additionally, its hard to focus on such tasks when your health is deteriorating.
What, like programming while stoned? Of course - are you retarded?
Actually I wanted to know whether it has long term affects and how it affects you during. Really wouldn't mind seeing some supporting evidence for your argument too. Is that to much to expect from a group of educated people. I am not advocating smoking and the common sense attitude is that of course it doesn't help.
Still I have heard people say it helps there creative abilities and in my opinion programming is a creative endeavour.
I smoke cigarrets and let me tell you it may not help but if I stand up once an hour for a cigarret break. It gives me time to think and come back for another hour.
thats total bull shiz brother; I used to smoke also, and when studying/programming I also took a break every hour or so to light one up, and I also used the same excuse to smoke: "it'll clear my mind". After I stopped smoking and drinking coffee my school productivity went up by about 50%!!! You should do the same....just STOP it!Quote:

I stopped smoking after I was out of breath after 15 minutes of full court basketball.
But to your original question: I've tried weed in the past maybe a handfull of time...but I never attempted anythin creative while doing it. I was never actually "high" so I can't really say anything definitive from first person account. With that said, you always hear of musicians and artists now and in the past using different sorts of drugs to help them in their endevours. $$$$ even poets like Byron liked their Opium; Froid (sp?), the psychologist couldn't live without crack :) so who knows? All I know is that you can induce anycreative ability naturally if you could induce it under the effect of a drug.
*cough*cigarettes*cough*Quote:

Also it is my belief that people who use the argument "it makes me more creative" to justify using drugs are just grasping at any possible reason.

Paul Willis: What about the benefits of marijuana smoking? Let's start with the brain: does it make you more creative? Nadia Sowolij: No, there's no evidence that they are better. They think that they are. I mean it's true that marijuana can make you think more tangentially, but they only feel like they're being more creative, in reality they're not. There's evidence to suggest that they're perhaps not being as productive as they would have if they weren't smoking marijuana
No firsthand experience here, but while highs may have produced lyrics like "yellow submarine," do you think that you could write the music to go with the lyrics at the same time?
Personally, I would rather listen to lyrics that make some sense
(sorry I'm making some assumptions here, but I've never seen any value in substance abuse)
the only substance that I still abuse way too much is good ol' alcohol. :D :D I'll take a 1.75L of Finlandia over dope anyday!Quote:

this is the kind of stuff a stoned persion makes:
That seems rather creative Davidp :)
I agree I need to stop smoking cigaretts! As to smoking weed I also agree, but admit I have tried programming while smoking. I found I tend to look at everything in more detail and it slows me down. I think I am a better debugger while stoned. As to the creative aspect thinking tangentially may help in some cases, but often the simplest solution is the best and who knows what you will come up with stoned. Code complete states that tricky solutions are not the best solutions. Unfortunately it is fun if you have the desciplen(sp?) to do it while stoned and this is a drawback if you know you should quit. I am not going to try and find evidence to support any possible positive aspects because ultimately it is not good and I don't want to try to encourage the behaivoir. Next time I get stoned though I will attempt to write some code and see how it goes posting here about my observations.
What a coincidence - I drive better drunk!
Well if you want to endanger other peoples life it's your twist but I don't think I am endangering anyone elses life. The word smart*#! comes to mind.
No, seriously, I always get where I'm going way faster. Sometimes the police even escort me!
I think you are more interested in getting someones goat than expressing your opinion on the subject. First you belittle me by implying I am retarded. I expect your young but I could be wrong. You probably have little experience and because of your statements I tend to think you are bigoted. Not open to input.
To further the discussion. I do not drink but once did. Comparing alcohol to pot is a bit of a stretch. The point is though if you drink and think anyone that smokes is a looser than you are a hypocrit.
Ultimately anything that is inflicting harm upon oneself is a bit irrational and makes me question my own motives. Emotional actions aren't always rational and the "fun" aspects of substance abuse are no excuse. It gives me insight into my own personality. In favor of a little endulgent fun, I am ultimately the cause of my own demise :(
The reason I posted is because I do question my own actions and with thoughtful input it may help me change my own habits, but I don't know if I can give up playing Wolfenstein ET while stoned ;)
I am younger than you, yes, but I fail to see how that makes me a bigot.
Think about what happens when you're stoned. Your mind is altered, yes? What makes you think you'd be better at something so mentally intense while your mind's not in its top shape?
And you know nothing about me - I have plenty of experience, and nothing good came out of it.
Also, it was a joke, Captain Oversensitive.
>>> if I stand up once an hour for a cigarret break.
I find it intensly irritating that smokers feel entitled to get up for a cigarette break once an hour. Why the hell should they get breaks to feed their habit, whilst those who do not partake of such anti social activities do not.
I don't know, smoking is a pretty social activity. I was working on a project for a company while I was still in school and the majority of my team including the project leader all smoked. Well, it soon became apparent that while they were outside working on a good case of lung chunk, they were often discussing the project and making decisions that the rest of us were not included in. Yeah that sucked.Quote:

On the main topic, if your partying (however you choose to do it), and your even thinking about coding your doing something wrong. Seriously.
Yup. Most people that smoke pot frequently seem to be.Quote:

 There aren't really long term effects of pot usage other than damage to lungs that has been proven. It does not kill brain cells, or any of that stuff that anti drug people like to say as I found out while doing a research paper for health.
>Do you think getting stoned adversly affects your programming ability?<
Absolutely yes. And absolutely not.
For me, it definitely inhibits my problem-solving ability, however I've found it very useful for debugging (as someone mentioned previously) as well as doing repetitive tasks which is just plain boring while sober. I frequently toke while I'm working on my Web site scripting because weed makes me even more of the pedant than I normally am, and I like my code to be nice and neat. :D Conversely, this causes my speed performance to decrease alongside the level of neat code, but I think that's an acceptable tradeoff as I do the Web development thing as a hobby and under no time restraints.
Of course, marijuana is a psychoactive drug, and because everyone's brain is different marijuana will affect everyone differently. To say it ultimately does or does not bring creativity is a misguided and misinformed bold judgement at best...
>Also it is my belief that people who use the argument "it makes me more creative" to justify using drugs are just grasping at any possible reason.<
Some people might perhaps, but don't be so hasty in assuming everyone who uses that argument is just trying to justify their drug use.
Just a note: the board guidelines state that "messages relating to cracking, (erroneously called "hacking" by many), copyright violations, or other illegal activities will be deleted."
Regardless of your opinion on the efficacy and benificence of current drug laws, marijuana use is illegal in the US and other countries. Please restrict yourselves to "theoretical" discussions.
(Theorically speaking of course Webmaster) If you plan to get stoned, why would you want to code? Attention span drops to zero, and you can barely type. How could that impove coding? From personal past experience I have noticed thats usage makes me unable to do any simple program. The two should stay apart if you chose to use.
I find programming gets in the way of getting stoned (theoretically).
Im not sure about geting high but when I get drunk I do alot of things better. This, I think is because often I am thinking of 3-4 things as a time(I also think this is the cause of my stuttering). So my brain work is seperated over several topics, yet when I drink my thinking is slowed and as such I put all my (albiet slower, mind on one thing and 1/2 is better then 1/4. I even type better as often, atleast 3 times in this) I type the next word without typing the previoius ie... firstWord thirdword. So I guess in this case It might make me alittle better but this is only proven drunk not high. And this is only with a slight buzz, I hate getting ..........faced, only like 3-4 shots or 4-5 beers.
Theoreticaly thinking your example of quenching your thirst did nothing for your writing ability and I highly ... doubt you could program in such a state. As to my typing ability Zakk, I guess this goes to show you that it is not hindered in anyway, except for the possible spelling errors. Of course any theoretical state may leave you wondering how to spell byte. Well I should get back to programming or rather start programming so good luck however you choose to lead your life!
Hay Alex, wanna go shoot up with me?Quote:
