I'll bet the most popular (as in most sales) are the ones written for windows. I mean, would any idiot write a program for linux and not for windows? I mean, there are a lot more people using Windows, and it is just normal to write software for it. I haven't seen one software that can't be used for Windows...There certainly is a larger variety...

    >>I will never use Linux! Its is not good enough for my purposes. It crashes too much.<<

You need to get some friends. Ya know the real kind that you can sit in the same room with and don't need a keyboard to communicate. Are you so desperite for any type of human interaction that you have to post such an obviously inflamatory and untrue statement? "Please someone talk to me..." I'm not saying that LInux never crashes, but it really puts the hurt on any windows product that you can throw at it. Ask anyone that actually works with critical server systmes (not you). ARe they going to implement an NT based kernel? No, simply because it makes them work too hard...

i'm suprised that on a C programming board that there are so many people making such ignornant comments as:
would any idiot write a program for linux and not for windows
This is another example of someone who has know clue what's happening in the real world. Yes, a lot of software is written for Windows, but it just makes sense to write for windows first if you're concerned about turning a profit. Windows development is driven by business (for the record there's nothing wrong with that). There's a whole community of people that are dedicated to making quality software without concerns for money. Most of the Open Source GPL movement will write for a linux or unix platform first because the development TOOLS are FREE for those plaforms. Yes, the WOULD be idiots (or maybe just extremely generous) if they dropped several hundred dollars on Visual C++ and Microsoft Platform and then distributed the software freely. basically you have no clue beyond your out of the Gateway box experience...There's a ton of software written for linux before windows, an i take offense to you calling us idiots.

you people need to get some balz and step up the plate...Windows is fine for the old ladies who email (or spend way too much time on message boards) or the brain damaged (like Troll_King), but if you're interested in software development don't be afraid to try Linux. It's only going to get better...

I just happen to hate linux!
You just happen to hate Linux? It's not normal to just hate things without a reason. No really, I understand exactly what you mean, it's pretty easy actually: If you just know how to use Linux you won't hate it. If you're open-minded you won't hate it either.

That's right, and all drivers are written for windows, that's why linux nor any other OS has been as good as windows
As we all should know by now - you can help Linux by using it instead of Windows. Next thing is, drivers are not much of a problem anymore unless you have some very special hardware. And there are many ways and options in the *nix world, you can do 'whatever' you want. So don't try to come up with limitations you don't have a clue about!

    Troll_King

In this case, everyone is now using Windows
Everyone... you like to exaggerate... please use numbers instead, I'm very interested myself. All I know is that Apache has 63% of the webserver market. Though I have no idea how many machines are running Appach on *nix, and how many are running it using Windows.

    >>I'm sure there are a few relics out there but it's just a matter of time before you guys get blown away. WinXP data centre 64-bit has your number.<<

yeah sure...i can see it now. companies are cutting back on costs not increasing them. i would guess if anything they're going to go for the lower cost solution. Equal performance, less cost....
and think about this if Linux is dead or blown away as you so intelligently put it, why are companies like HP, Compaq, and IBM jumping on the Linux train. That's right they see opportunity, not a dead end...

Tell you what, you just keep buying C++ books and telling everyone that you've mastered C in two months, and keep your mouth shut when it comes to issues that impact the real world. You should maybe leave these discussions to those that are in phase with reality....

Hasn't anyone yet realized that almost all of the other OSes use Microsoft Internet Explorer? When the OSes that say microsoft should go down use Microsoft's Software!!
plus, internet explorer is the best

Hasn't anyone yet realized that almost all of the other OSes use Microsoft Internet Explorer?
Where do they get those ideas?

Personally I tend to use Opera for Linux and IE for Windows. It doesn't really matter though. I'm also using Conqueror (for Linux), Netscape (for Win and Linux), Mozilla (for Linux) - and they're all doing fine for browsing the web.

I'm going to learn Lynx! Has anybody used it?

    Netscape sucks, it's so slow...

And if you really do a survey, I bet there are more people using windows than linux. And if linux is so GREAT, why don't people switch? There must be a catch...Most people know that more software is written for windows...Even World Book CD-ROMs are written for Windows and Mac only..NO LINUX...ANd I've got the box right here, and I can't find the word LINUX anywhere...

    >>And if you really do a survey, I bet there are more people using windows than linux. <<

i don't think anyone's trying to dispute this. It doesn't show anyting about the merits of one over the other.

    >>And if linux is so GREAT, why don't people switch? <<

i really don't know. Fear, ignorance, no desire, and lack of information could be reasons. Everyone got a story the heard from their roomates best friend on why linux won't get the job done, and it tends to scare people. People need to stop listening to people like Troll_King and find out for themselves. I would just think that people who are interested in computer science would pick a platform in which they can view the source code and choose the path where they would learn more. you know, the adventure. my mistake.....

    >>Even World Book CD-ROMs are written for Windows and Mac only..NO LINUX...ANd I've got the box right here, and I can't find the word LINUX anywhere...<<

yeah you're out of luck there...are you kidding? This and the Internet explorer comment have no merit. Browser selection has nothing to do with the merits of the operating system. World book CD-ROMs? wow...

my apologies if you're eight years old....

    okay

I USE OPERA BOTH FOR LINUX AND WINDOWS.

As it was said people don't use linux because they are afraid that something will go wrong and they won't know how to fix it. Now tell me if I am wrong but isn't a big part of life learning? and that is exactly what you do when using Linux, you learn more about your computer what it is capable of and more about you skills as a computer aficianado. And you say you want more control of your OS but since you are a programmer you can have a lot of control over linux THEY DO GIVE YOU THE SOURCE CODE. It is called editing it.

In Linux you can easily make it do exactly what you want unlike windows. Now I have nothing against Bill and think he is doing a great job with the whole Microsoft thing but you can at least explore new worlds. What would it be like if no one ever tried to colonize America because it wasn't what they find comfortable. We'd all be traped in England and other countries being ruled by either a king or a communist instead of the President and we'd not have as many (if any) rights that we have. So in closing LINUX RULES.

    >>I've used Linux and it's a piece of junk. I would perfer to have full control over my operating system so I choose Windows<<

first, this comment pretty much proves my point. Your comments hold no credibility, and the Windows user's "war" on Linux is fueled by ignorance.

second, why don't you share you're experience with us? if it was so horrilbe, you surely can enlighten us. i betting that linux could handle anything YOU could throw at it. I have never called windows a piece of junk. in fact i'm impressed with XP. My point is that Linux is and will be a viable option for business, research, and individual use. Cost and flexibility is always a factor, and Linux is getting better every day...
