    how do you type?

This isn't quite as dumb as it sounds, I'm not asking how to use a keyboard or anything :P

Just had a discussion about the diferent ways that people type, and was curious enough to extend it here.

Personally I fit into the "I have no idea" catagory. I learned to touchtype a long time ago, but since then I haven't taken any notice of how I type, it's just automatic. Watching myself as I do this, I seem to be doing a mix of touchtype and stare at keyboard

Sounds like me. I can touchtype, and do sometimes, but sometimes I look at the keyboard. When I do, though, I don't even look at specific letters, just at the whole thing. I think it's like a safety net for me.

hmm, for some reason my poll didn't come up, they were meant to be:

    1 - index fingers (hunt & peck)
2 - staring at keyboard, ignore screen till you're done
    3 - touchtype
    4 - just bash the key's with whatever's closest
    5 - No idea how I type.

This is kinda pointless I know, but I'm sitting very bored in the office and need something to do....

Touch typist here. Learned to type at about age 10. Like Govtcheez I'll glace at the keyboard once in a while. Usally it happens when I'm tired and trying to remember where some stupid symbol is, but once I glace I remember.

same here. I took a class in junior high. I sometimes look at keyboard for not-so-common characters and the numbers at the top. When typing a lot of numbers though I use the keypad and don't need to look at the keys. For some reason I just never got the top of the keyboard numbers down. I'm sure my typing speed would be considered fast. But I'm on the thing all day so it should be

I never look at the keys. When I've lost my anchorage, I just feel for the bumps on j or f.

I don't really ever look at the keys unless I forget where a specific key is. I'm trying to get used to my laptop keyboard and where some of the symbols are. I don't really know how I type, other than that I know I hit the right letters when I need to. I mean that I don't know if I hit the right letter with the right finger to actually be considered a touch typist.

I took a course several years ago, but I didnt learn it properly. Two years ago, I learned again, from a keyboarding book. I dont have to look down at all, like FYB, just for some uncommon characters, or the numbers. Im not the fastest typist, but Im good enough

I touchtype, although when it gets dark I tend to look at the keyboard a lot, not to look for any specific key, but to see where my hands are. The cool thing I like about egronomic keyboards is that they provide a breakpoint in the middle of the board that you can use to identify what keys you're at, well, that's what I do anyway... I mean I typed this entire message without looking at the keyboard...

I learnt typing years ago from a mavis beacon typing tutor. However these days i just use two pencils to type with, with the eraser end hitting the keys ofcourse.

Not only do i find this method fun at times, but also in between typing i play some cool drum beats on my desk, coffee mug and other surrounding items.

Good Ol' home row touch typing for me. I learned how to type in Typing 101 - fastest speed - 98 wpm.
    c++->visualc++->directx->opengl->c++;
(it should be realized my posts are all in a light hearted manner. And should not be taken offense to.)

I'm an unorthodox typer, my beotch instructor in junior high wanted to flunk me because of it. Basically we were graderd per keystroke. In her opinion the space bar should be hit with the right thumb, i use my left (even though im right handed). She wanted to flunk my ass cause out of so many keystrokes, every time i hit the space bar was incorrect. I finally had my dad come in and tell the $$$$$ off.

I'm a touch typist at around 100 wpm (when my hands aren't cold...) Ergonomic keyboards are very nice, but I use the bumps on the f and j to locate the keys on the keyboard, even though my index fingers tend to more or less hover/fly over the keyboard and don't even land on those keys except when I need them. Oh, and I always hit the space bar with my left thumb as well, although I'm left handed so it makes sense I guess.
    Away.

wow, I didn't think that mattered. I hit the space bar with both thumbs, sometimes the left, sometimes the right, sometimes both at the same time.
