Is this the current ATI video card of choice? A friend is going to pay me $300 for building him a $4,000 desktop computer whizbang box. I want to have excellent TV out, TV in, and 3d performance for his various applications(gaming & porn).

Besides from the whole Linux thing, im big on Cadd. My ATI at times gets alittle buggy. I dont know about they other guys so check out some reviews. I dont hate my card or want to replace it, but i dont think ill buy ATI again. But i have to admit once it set up it is awsome.

Yeah, there is. We(intel) win by like a point and we always mention Hyperthreading.

Intel always seems to win with rendering. But i still love my P4, im sure AMD is going to come up with Hyperthreading.

The Athlon XP 3200+ has laid claim to the title of "Fastest Desktop CPU." But in reality, though, it is something entirely different: the mighty value champ has degraded into a pusillanimous paper tiger. Although, our testing engineers only found fault with the aggressive model-numbering system.

The benchmark tests, on the other hand, leave no room for doubt: XP 2800+ would have been a more realistic label for the processor, which wouldn't have been a problem for anyone, if AMD still wants to go toe-to-toe with Intel's P4.

yeah sounds like AMD's processor really kicks the 3ghz

Please don't go by what tomshardware says about AMD stuff... they are probably the most biased source out there when it comes to AMD, his reviews are just a joke to most people.

The 3200 is fair comparison to the P4B 3.06, even with hyperthreading. It's only when you step up the P4C chips that the AMD's really fall behind. The 3200 VS. P4C 3.2 GHz is not a fair match, the P4 will kill it in a very large portion of benchmarks. Even 3200 VS P4C 3.0 GHz is a bit off. The 800 MHz FSB of the newpentiums is really the deciding factor here.

Not as though any of that really matters anymore... we'll just see how Prescot Vs. A64 goes

Side Question: What is the better deal?
    (in the following context)

Say a moderate speed improvment doesn't satisfiy me. Say I like to upgrade in ghz(multiple even, not just one!) Also say, that while I want a whzibang box of a computer, I'm willing to step down from the pentium 4, to the 3200, as long as it isn't a major speed difference.

    Point in case:
    Is comparing the 3.2ghz P4 to the 3200+ like comparing a 1ghz pentium to a pentium 90mhz?

Is the pentium 4 even 50% more powerful than the 3200+?

If not, would you justify that the 3200+ is a better deal? I certainly would. I am curious because I'm going to build a really nice computer(bout $4k) for a friend, and while both processors will do what he is intending to do, he is also interested in saving money where applicable(obviously!). We have already agreed to take the 3200+ because it'll do everything he wants it to do, the 3.2ghz is $200 more than the 3200+ and I doubt it would be magically faster than the 3200+ (50%ish or more faster).

    What do you think?

screw price, screw speed, headaches are what you want to eliminate as far as building the pc goes. I've had nothing but headaches while setting up hardware with intel products. It is extremely picky when it comes to ide devices. so much so that if you're not careful, your setup can make it physically impossible to connect all the drives, im battling with that one right now. So because of that I will always use AMD...my dad went and bought intel for this and stuck me with the biotch work

Ouch. I've never had problems with AMD, in my expierence. That's what's in the computer that I'm using now(which I built).

    All right then. It's settled.

(I'm not personally building a new computer until a stable, and resonably priced 4ghz chip comes out)

I knew this would become an intel vs amd thread

Intel wont be in my new pc, period. Intel is my brand of choice, but as of late im happier with my amd machines. 250 was the whole price, software i own will be preinstalled for me. Theres no software i need that i dont already have.

    look closely at the sticker
Its not the asus brand. There are several companies that have they're own version of the Gforce cards, mine is PNY because i have built two machines with them and im impressed. Not getting that version anyway, sprung for the 9000.

ATI charges too much for too little when it comes to the new card.

I don't think THG are really that biased, a few years ago, when Athlons were spanking P3s THG reported it as such.
