Public Enemy influenced much of the rap of today, and they're from the late 80s/early 90s.
"Smells Like..." changed music; if you can't see that, you have problems. The song came out back in '91, do you have any idea how bad music was back then? I mean, that was back in Michael Bolton's day. Bands that come out now are still influenced by the music Kurt created. Nobody is influenced by any other artist from back then; the rappers aren't trying to mimic Vanilla Ice or MC Hammer, and the rockers are no longer trying to mimic Guns n Roses (with those stupid, big, Slash-hats).
