i haven't had much experience with AMD, but i'm using a pentium 4 @2GHZ... I'd probably use an AMD though, mostly because they're cheaper... the only reason i have a P4 is because I'm running with a prebuilt dell...

I own an AMD, I like it. Although I like either of them, I used to like AMD much more, but recently AMD's are way too hot (even if you have a SSVolcano 9 on it running at 5500 RPM). I've set up 4 pentium 4's this year and they run at about 33 Degrees Celcius and are quite stable. I think my next PC will be a pentium.

I've always liked MIPS processors, though those aren't PC processors. Between Intel and AMD, I'd have to go with AMD, though I haven't used any P4s much. AMD's have usually been roughly equivalent, and a bit cheaper.

No, it doesn't have hyperthreading on it.

I like AMD all the way. I've used them in my last two computers (500 MHz K6-2, and Athlon XP 2000+). My Athlon XP overclocks like a dream. I am running it up to 1.9 GHz right now. Not much higher, but I just basically wanted to be able to do it. Now that I can do it, I'm going to put more cooling in and overclock it some more.

    Now I can beat out a P4 2.2 GHz

PS: Has anyone tried the new Athlon XP 3200+ yet?

edit: fixed my overclock speed from 1.8 to 1.9

amd's do not perform as well as intels so obviously i run intels... not to mention i dont like spending 40-60$ on fans that sound like a plane taking off

Neither is better. I have both, both work, both work fine.

Put a top of the range Intel on a basic mobo with an average chip set, or a class AMD on an equally poor mobo, you'll get similar, (poor), performance.

Right chip, on the right board with the right chipset, and it'll fly.

The question is meaningless without the environmental issues.

hyper threading is just faking 2 processors, a chessy smp setups.

it will take more than one thread at a time. so in theory it should be faster since its doing more and the speed and cache can handle more. it works with out software and is seen as 2 processors, which is nice.

ive been looking for a couple of good becnhmarks for this. i hear that a smp board for 2 p3s will out do a p4 with hyperthreading and it will be cheaper. i think it was just on a board so it needs to be proven.

    and smp-ers here?

When the Athlon64 comes out it'll kick Intel's sorry ass. It's based on the Opteron which kicks the P4's ass. Especially in gaming (which Athlon is better than Pentium for gaming anywayz). The only thing the P4 beat the Opteron on was video encoding, but who cares about that? Oh, and the Opteron was running like 2.06 GHz and the P4 was 3.06 GHz w/ HT. The Athlon64 is just a home version of the Opteron.

The important thing you missed frenchfry164 is that the 64bit Opteron core will run 32 bit code natively, i.e. just as fast. The Intel 64bit platform will not do this - 32bit code will take a sizeable performance hit when running on a 64bit Intel - at least at the present, they will probably fix this at some time.
