    High Schoolers - Techy Classes?

has any high schooler here had any luck with techy classes. i mean classes like computer science(anything, even the cisco networking stuff) or ap classes.

right now at my school there is nothing. no computer oriented classes(besides from a keyboarding and a m$ office class) or aps.

did any on successfuly get some of these things started? how did it go?

first i tried it unix-ify my school. i was told that my one redhat linux box out of a few hundred windows boxes would be the one to be rooted, along with be a all around security risk. and apparently all unixes want to be a dns server with no way to disable it, this will take down all of my schools networks. this is what the sys-admin told me, complete bull.

i have no idea what to do, im thinking of ap classes. i do have a teacher nice enough to want something like this(unfortunaly his qualified to double click and not much else). the classes might get a little attention but any other good things to go for (the engineering guys have first robotics, what do computer guys have?).

stuff like this would help for college, did you guys come up with anything to increase your odds?

my school doesnt have anything. i took the ap without a class and did pretty well on it, im trying to push them to add more computer classes, because as of now they have basic computer courses, and one really crappy programming class that goes upto while loops in an entire school year...

just try making a good positive impression. try getting an internship with the network guys, even though its not entirely programming related, its a start. anything computer related you do, even outside of school you can put on your college application or resume, and you can send your resume along with your college applications, they like to see you have professional experience

but in my case, its really hard to convince the school because of the mass budget cuts...in my school its so bad that theres not enough $$ in the budget to get money for the photocopiers, its bull$$$$...like its not even a poor school. but its mainly the stupid education budget, economy sucks major ass

I took a 2 VB classes my freshman year, and this year I've taken honors C++ and AP C++. Next year they're changing the C++ classes to Java and I might take that (but I can't re-take the AP class...oh well.).

    Sucks for you, d00der .

I think you can if you want a better score.

as for the classes, there are some info processing classes, multimedia, and the programming classes. i'm in ap cs this year, took intro last year. my teacher is really cool, she really knows her stuff.

i thought about that, but after hearing all the unix bashing, no way in hell. i also found out that my "tech cordinater" is queen newbie. my old music teacher that was all mac, all tech support and laughed at by the real sys admin(a former gm programmer, but he retired years ago).

i am trying to make some good impressions. i have some attention, but theres no money. my school is on welfair, or so it seems. we cant aford paper, yes, paper.

which is bull since we have lot of new dells. im thinking of bugging every teacher for ap class(i only need some teacher to standard up, then i can atleast take the test. ill worry about classes later) and get a club going.

If this person is the one teaching the classes then I suggest you not take any of those classes because he/she is absolutely clueless.

this is what I hate about school
for all I know, they think I know nothing about computers, because I have never even taken a keyboarding class...my best class is geometry because it might eventually prove useful in programming, even thought we go insanely slow through the book...actually the book does cover some basic triginometry (which i will have probably learned before we read about it)

whatever you take, make sure you study.

The only thing I learned in high school was how to avoid as much extra work as possible and still get A's and B's and it has left me with poor study habits in college.

But it shouldn't matter too much what you take in high school; any good tech book and a week' s worth of reading can teach you.

Well they're switching AP CS to Java, and if I get a 5/4 on the AP exam there's no need to re-take it...but that's beyond the point, either the school won't let me re-take the class, or I don't get college credit for it...

It still has the same course code as the one I'm taking now, so they can't put me in it again unless I fail.

i read about the switch to java, i want to lean c++ quickly!

but one of the tips i got from a guy in college with a job at ibm is to be a programmer not a "software engineer", so im wondering if i should remember all the c++ stuff after the test.

    aren't programmers technically software engineers?

either way, if your gonna be a programmer why do you want to forget the c++ you learned?

what i think it means is, do you think vbers are programmers? html guys? software engineers are the fad programmers that are completely despencible.

i havent really done alot with it so a c++er should probally step in, but i dont see how its worth it. i can see how objects/classes are nice, but is it so hard to make a new source file and come up with unique function names? is being about to use == with strings that great? and the one thing that really convinced me, how many kernels are written in c++. it seems more preference that anything else, but ill still learn. just wont use it for long, i bet.

Well just want to say- it is unfortunate some of you do not have qualified teachers in high school in CS. Why dont some of you try to pick up reference books and lean the stuff on your own?

I myself have a teaching cert in CS and teach at the college level. Before I got my college job many public high schools where interested- but most of them 1. Could not pay me enough for my certs and degrees or 2. They just wanted me to the multimedia or apps classes- which I felt was not worth my time.

As for AP CS I just got choosen to serve as a faculty consultant for the exam. So watch out!!!
