Is it not a good idea to know what there is in the thing to change, and how they inter-relate, before changing anything?

The bell rang, cutting off my rant. I have a teacher who seems to think that one can learn to configure a router without actually configuring a router. Yes it is a good idea to know what needs to be changed, but we have spent over a month reading nothing but show this, enable that. I'm sorry if i confused anyone.
