Shedding tears for your old computer parts

How many of you out there have had a hard time throwing away your old, outdated computer parts, cases, boards, etc?

The other day I was about to throw away my old AT mid tower case, along with an ASUS Pentium I board and several other things.

I just couldn't do it!!!! Even though I probably will never use that case or board again, I just could not bring myself to throw it away. I also tried to throw away its old 550MB hard drive, but again could not. Man, I killed a lot of DOOM demons on that system and saved planet earth at least a gazillion times.

At one time they were state of the art and I paid good money for them. Plus they still work perfect, even though they are essentially useless. It just seems to me that they deserve a better burial than in the trash can.

Technology is so weird. One day you are paying top-dollar for it, and the next day it is trash. Not very easy to cope with.

So, my closet is cluttered with old drives, parts, boards, cases, etc., that I'll never use, but just cannot bring myself to part with.

    Anyone else have this problem?

I'm saving all my junk for the nostalgia freaks in about 50 year's time

My home is a computer-museum as well (I've got nearly the full scale from C64 to PII).

In Europe firms use to donate their not so up-to-date equipment (e.g. to schools) or sell it for a symbolical sum.

Maybe some poor guys are just waiting for someone to give'em a few Pentiums with 540Mb HDD...

I despise my PII 366. It takes forever to boot up. Maybe it's in part because it is a clone. The system that I use most often is much nicer, a AMD Athlon K7 1.4gig. I can tolerate this speed but I'm always looking for a better computer. I just moved into a new place. I had to throw old stuff away. I didn't want it to mess up a new house. A person collects junk over the years. Sadly that's what this stuff amounts too. It's depressing.

You can still find uses for them, Bubba! I occasionally use a TRS-80 at work as a dumb terminal, just because it's too old to be useful any other way, and it still works fine....

At the very least, whenever the urge to blast an Imp into next Tuesday overtakes you, you'll still have it around!

well, for example, I have my old Gateway 2000 P4D-66, which is a 486/66 MHz with 20 Mb RAM and 1.7 Gig Hard Drive (well, it originally came with a 540 MB hard drive and 4Mb RAM), but I still have it right beside me, I can play some network games with both computers and I can share my Internet connection with it and I still use it just for the old times.

And I still have my OLD IBM PCjr in a box somewhere.

Wow. I have such a bunch of pc garbage lying around here.
What a slob I am. Every time I tell my self to throw it away,
something in my head keeps telling me I'm throwing something
valuable away and I can't do it. Old. 28.8 modems, video cards,
cases, processors, calbles. God what a mess. A whole dresser
crammed full of useless garbage! What am I gonna do?

How could you ever throw anything away? That stuff is useful electronics, no matter how old it is. Think of what you could do with it. You could set up a lab of old 486's all networked together for no reason at all, just to say that you did. And what about old games like Doom, Mechwarrior 1, Jet pack, Packman, and all of those trillions of old classic games? Ever think your computer will get to fast for those? My old 586 in my room is already too fast for some of them, so I am scared to run it on my AMD 300 Mhz with WinXP on it....Mechwarrior 1 runs like freaking LIGHTNING on my 586....I was incredibly surprised, because it ran normally on my old 486 which I have sitting in another room. So if you get all this new stuff and throw out old stuff, how will you play your old, classic games? I dont know about you, but I still like to get out Doom and pound demons. Right now I am trying to beat Episode 4 on Ultraviolence...and it is HARD. I am loving it. After I do that I will go back and do all the episodes on nightmare. Has anyone ever beat Doom 2 on nightmare? that would be hard. Its hard enough on ultra-violence.

Some of us *points to self* have crapy computers *points to self again* and would gladyly acecpt a computer *points to self*

When I do replace this computer, I plan to keep it. I still have the old hard drive out of it so I will put that back in so that I could install linux or something.

I am having the same "outdated" computer problem. I want to do the exact thing as you, gamegod. I need to get a new computer and just fool around with this one I have. How "outdated" is your computer? Here is mine.

    366 emachines
    -3 gig hdd
    -64 meg ram pc66
-a really, really old video card

Just, not a good computer. How about yours? I'm saving up. I'll have enough money after another program. That should be it.

-belive modem was replaced by dad.

I have the oldest computer in the world aprently. My dad has a newer one but he is to up tight about his, so I can't do anything on it.

    -no unziper
-not allowed to dowload to hard drive must fit on floppy.
    -no programming

I test my programs on his computer, but I am starting to get into directx 8 so that is now a problem.

weel, It's embarassing to say this:
I am currently (and I mean as of right now) using a 19200 bps modem that connects at 14400 but it says that it downloads at 9200 bps but I get data at 4200 bps or even less, and that's the one I'm using to write this.
