Still Unemployed!

arlo,guys
i have problem here.i graduated few month ago but till now i haven't got a job.i don't know where is the problem?is there anyone can tell me that?i know that my programming skills needs some improvement.i still don't get any company that provides some training for me first. As u know that,every fresh graduates..
they don't know how is the working enviroment? am i rite? that's how......
in fact,there is slight problem with myself,i'm quite scared in coding.i also don't know whether i should choose back this field or not. i really need some advice over here. for myself,i think it's would be best if some company can provides training for me.
As i don't know much of the latest programming stuff in the current market.i think that's all for rite now. hope every person here read my msg.. i will write back very soon. Thanks for reading.

At the moment, the economy is down, companies have problems and prefer more experienced programmers above the new ones. And there are a lot of experienced programmers, who were fired because of the problems at their companies, so you have a lot of competition.

Decide first on which branch of programming you want to work in and then try to learn as much as you can. Read books, create software etc.

Join the army reserves for now, it's a paycheck and they can give u some valuable experience in programming if u follow that track with them. Also, get involved in www.sourceforge.net in some open source projects or some of your own projects - whatever you do make sure you have a completed whatever when ur done.

Getting involved in Web programming is a really good way to get ur foot in the door also, such as learning ASP or PHP and constructing some completed websites - companies are looking for ppl who have experience who have created something - I think they've been pretty dissapointed with grads who haven't and can't program real software without signifigant training.

I graduated end of January in 2002 with an distinction. But did it land me a job? the point is that it's a tough world out there and we just have to deal with it

I think i want to get into web programming.it's hard to get the software for the ASP.am i rite?As i don't know anything about ASP right now.Yeah. u r right,rod. true...most companis prefer programmers with at least 2 years of xp. But there's also a lot of other small begining companies that seek newly grads. And sitting on your ass isn't gonna help. do what I did. Go to the companies and tell them that you'll you will work for half the pay just so that they can give you some xp. And if they like you, they will take you as an permenant employee. In this "Game" it's the xp that counts.

If that fails. Do what I did. I have a computer related job...(Not programming) I'm a systems operator for Fujitsu - ICL, and just gaining xp from them, While searching for another job

Ohh,well, Thanks for the advice bioninja.I will try to do that as u said.On the way,there isn't much software company in here. The market is quite bad nowadays. Well,wat r u doing a system operator in Fujitsu-ICl. Is it near in urs country? what xp u get from them? i think i want to get the same job as u=(computer related) but not programming . ............. i have to try more harder.

Ha! Everybody comes to Texas for work. :p The economy is not so good, but there is always work. If you're fresh out of school with no experience it will be hard to ever get a job coding. For me, it was a friend that helped get my foot in the door, otherwise it would have been impossible to get a job with less than one year of programming. Universities are a good start actually because you can build your reputation writing programs for faculty, etc...

But realize that NO company will choose someone with just a minor interest or looking to fill a position. You have to be a driven person whose is prepared to pour all of his/her effort into seeing this project to completion - and programming offices are notorious for late-night pizza dinners and all-night coffe/bathroom rounds. We're actually working on a project right now where we've spent the last 2 weeks doing ~9:30 am to ~10:00 pm. It's getting really old. put it that way :) Perhaps I should offer my spot to you. :D Seriously, I am considering buying a restaurant in Fort Worth right now. My view is, you can do something you love to do only so long as it does not demand too much from you. Unfortunately, programming is one such field. At thirty, I'm ready to settle down and do something more edifying, and since I love to cook, the restaurant idea sounds very nice.
