I was looking to either join the air force or the navy, and I wanted to see if anyone here had any experience.
No army for me, and I'm hoping for an education along the way. I know the navy provides an education, but does the air force?
Also, what would a daily schedule be like for me, and how many years do you typically serve to get a college scholarship?

i fear the draft so in reply to the title, yes.
I don't know what country you're from, but here in Canada the Air Force is much better than Navy.
Salary, Education, everything is the same... but the airforce has more trades which are useful once/if you get out. Plus, the quality of living is much better in the Air Force.
My father has been in the Navy for 40 years. Awhile back, my brother was looking to get into the Military and he was urged by daddy to join the Air Force, not the Navy.
I believe you have to serve for 5 years after you graduate. (All expenses paid)
in the USA, AF is 100% the way to go....

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they only offer associate degrees, unfortunately.
I'd like to have used the tuition money for a graduate degree.:(
If they don't have computer science in the air force, I'm dead, it's the only thing I'd know coming in :)

i would join the air force simply to be able to have the chance to fly.....that would be awesome to fly a jet...much better (in my opinion of course) than sailing on boats all the time...

Are you actually going to choose to go to the navy or the air force based on the results from the pole, or did you just want opinions from others?
Your best bet is to talk to your local Armed Forces recruiters for the two branches.
Why not consider the Army or Marines?
You should join the Navy. They can provide a good education.
Also if you want to fly, FLY NAVY!. Navy pilots are the best in the world , in my opinion.

You must meet VERY strict requirements to become a pilot. I wouldn't join the Airforce expecting to be a pilot.

You're not going to die just by joining the Military. Most people who join the Air Force never go up in a plane, and many in the Navy don't sail on ships.
So what the hell are you talking about?
Join the Sea Org and audit your way to a better life and empty pockets.

Why on earth would anyone want to be in the military? I really don't understand that. Don't you realize you can get killed?! Especially given our current administration and global situation.
If you become a programmer as a civilian, no one is going to kill you. You can live a nice, happy, calm, peaceful life coding away in safety. On the other hand, if you choose to become a programmer for the armed forces, you must first go through boot camp, a euphemism for hell.
After that, there is no guarantee that you'll be a programmer. Anyone in the armed forces is subject to assignment, so if they decide you're better used as a foot soldier, that's what you're gonna be. Even if you are used as a programmer, you still can't decide what sort of programs you'll get to work on. You'll have no freedom to do what makes you happy.
And then, on top of all of that, there is always the chance that you will be killed in any number of unpleasant manners. Where on earth is the upside to enlisting?:confused:

Upside to enlisting? There's WAY to many things to list.

I would choose the Air Force as you will see more places - if you join the Navy u will most likely be stationed at a dock or port loading ships.
The military has good programs for college - it's probably a better deal in the Navy since they need recruits more than other services but it's like 25% is all u pay for college - the military picks up the rest of the tab.
Whats wrong with the Army?? Thats where I plan on going. (Im in Australia, btw)
Being in a plane:
RISK - Being shot down. Pilot error. Running out of fuel.
ADVANTAGE - In the air. Moving fast.
Being on a ship:
RISK - Being sunk.
ADVANTAGE - Can attack remote targets with artillery.
Being on the ground:
RISK - Being bombed by air.
ADVANTAGE - Can have large forces. Easier to go undetected (no radar, etc)
This is just the way I see it. I chose army.

My decision on which to join wouldn't be based on this thread, but after posting this question on a couple message boards, it seems as if the majority is telling me to join the air force.
Anyways, I'm not concerned, I just want to benefit from the experience and the education.
I also learned that you can get an associates degree from the air force community college, but they also allow you to take courses at local colleges (depending where you're stationed) to complete your bachelors (if anyone's interested).

Anyways, I'm already in training courses for c++/visual c++.net, but I'm not getting college credit for it- I'm just doing it because I enjoy programming. We get to build large real world projects, and what you learn in the class is >= what you learn in college because you're actually programming. By the time I join the air force, I'll just have to take some classes to keep up with my skills, and hopefully get the degree I want :)
Although I want to go to the air force so I can get the government to pay for my education (and to become a better person- of course :)), and the c++ classes I'm taking now cost a lot, and I'm not from a rich family.
Now's not the time to join the armed services, in my opinion. If you're assigned to a combat situation in Iraq or North Korea, death is certainly a possibility--that's the whole reason behind the military.
I don't know about the Army, Marines, or Air Force; but the Navy has some odd traditions, at least the submarine crews do.
If I were you, I would join the AirForce...
I love the AirForce and hate the Navy...

i know when i was in the Army in the 70's the Air Force guys had a much better life. they had better living conditions, better facilities, better assignments.
if you can get in (GPA, Criminal record, Health) the Air Force would be the way to go.

GPA??? I didn't know that they worried about your gpa. I wasn't a very good student in high school :) Not that I wouldn't be now, but no classes ever interested me back then, never took programming :(Quote:

I would think so, a little, but wouldn't they go more with how you had proved yourself while actually in service? Eh, maybe someone who's actually been in the military could reply...
Oh yeah, just thought, my mate recently came out of the Navy here in England (served on a minesweeper incidently). He said it sucked, that's why he left. He reckoned he was little more than a glorified cleaner, just cleaned the ship all day long. He said it got a little better cos he managed to worm his way into the communications sector and learnt all about radio comms, but it still wasn't enough to outweigh the incessant cleaning, so he quit.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm already a functional programmer and know computers well, and I'm not even half way through my current corporate training courses for c++ programming.

I'm a pretty determined individual, but I'd like to travel through the sea, so I'm still leaning towards the navy.
Currently I am persuing a Royal Navy (UK) commission. If I get it, the nice folks at the Ministry of Defence will give me a £1,000-£4,000 bursary every year while I'm doing Computer Science at university (Covering my tuition fees and (most) of my other debt...) and then I have to serve I think 4 years after I graduate.
When you owe the Government as much money as I will, I think the only way I could survive in work without them taking about 20% of my salary away would be to let their defence budget handle it outright. Okay, I might get killed, I can deal with that. The fact is, as an officer I wouldn't be cleaning the ship all day, oh no... :p
I did consider the RAF for a little while, but I simply thought that you either become a pilot or you sit around in a base all day shining nose cones. I'm not a frequent flyer, so I didn't want to limit my choices so distinctly. The Royal Navy lets you choose up to three disciplines you'd be interested in. I chose Engineer first, then Flight Crew, and finally Warfare (Command). I'm not 100% keen on flying, but I think I might like it if I was given the chance.
I'd definitely be into engineering though.
The Army did hold a small amount of interest with me, and I did go on a Territorial (Part-timers) training weekend, but it seemed too much like hard work for me. You're miles from anywhere half the time and if anyone gets injured, even if you've got a medic there's not a lot they can do for them...
The Royal Marines is DEFINITELY not for me. You have to be an 'ard Middle Counties b*stard to get anywhere in there... :eek:
I'll admit I come from a military family (All of cousins and uncles have been in the Army, and my father), but I didn't really consider this option based on history. Fact is, I don't want to be paying off my student loan forever. And who knows, maybe I'll like the Service.

Yeah I've got a buddy in the Royal Marines. And he is 'hard as nails'. But he's also thick as a bit of 2x4, so I guess the two go well together. He loves it though so fair play to him.
Ok, my dad's a B52 pilot fo the Air Force. Here's the facts:
1. If you enlist, you don't go throught "boot camp", you go through basic training. Boot camp's for marines.
2. You must serve 5 years minimum.
3. To be a pilot in the Air Force, you generally must be an officer. You must either get a ROTC scholorship or the Air Force Academy (you have to get a SENATOR to get you in here).
4. The Air Force is better.
The only branch you'll really die in is the Marines. People seem to think joining the Army means you'll be fighting people. Only ONE B52 has crashed in the last 20 years, and that was a pilot's error, not some SAM.

It'd be quite funny trying to persuade my local MP to put me down for a military academy, seeing as I didn't vote him/her in because I was too young, so there's no incentive for him/her to do it. 2. That's what tankers are for. You refuel in the air. You fly the airplane at the right spot and a "pipe" comes out of the tanker. It connects to your plane and you refuel. If you turn too much, the pipe automatically breaks off. My Dad had to show students the limits of the pipe without breaking it off, in the middle of a turn to the right.
