You can't get another os running on the xbox without BIOS modification or a new chip (MOD Chip)

Yeah, but there are resoures about getting linux on the Xbox on the net, but I don't know, if it really works, cause I haven't got a Xbox.

When I have one, I gonna run it as linux server *g*

    > without BIOS modification

Does the BIOS tell the Xbox it can only run whatever version of Windows is on there?

Ahhh! I explicitly said that I thought you were right!

I just meant that you shouldn't flame/blame a person for posting info from a reliable source.

i know what you said... but you obviously didn't read what GC or I wrote... CNN is not noted for it's accurate Tech news... hence, not reliable in this field.

To run Linux (or anything else for that matter, hmm windows on an xbox hows that for a monopoly in a box) you either need to modify the hardware or have Microsoft's private key that they use to digitaly sign programs.

The Xbox is basicly equiped with a sort of "Palladium Lite" so that only programs signed by microsoft will be executed.

So what they need to do is crack Microsoft's private key. Hmm RSA 2048 bit asymetric key, yeah that will be real easy to crack

    > RSA 2048 bit asymetric key,

That's a bit of overkill for a game console, isn't it?

I would agree GW, it is overkill. But you have to remember that the DRM system in the XBox was Microsoft's first test for their upcoming Palladium system. So they wanted to make it as secure as possible. Granted they didn't do very well, a Phd. candidate at MIT got arbitrary code running on an Xbox in less than a year I believe.

And just for everyone's info, it took 5 years for distributed.net to crack a 64 bit RSA key, the largest RSA key ever cracked (at least publicly) was for the RSA-155 challenge, it was 512 bits, and took over 35 cpu years. RSA (so probably slightly biased) estimates that you would need 320 million 520 MHz Pentium-class machines to crack a 1024-bit key in one year, and so you would need 2^100 times that for a 2048-bit key, RSA also has a $200,000 prize for the first person to crack a 2048 bit RSA key, so I guess that makes the pot $300,000. And if my research / math is correct it would take approximately 10^53 times the age of the universe to crack it if working at the same speed Distributed.net worked at. Wow thats depressing
