What is/are your favourite movie(s)? And why it is your favourite?
Hard to say, but here are some great movies:
Körkarlen (1921) = The phantom chariot
Det sjunde inseglet (1957) = The seventh seal
Il Buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966) = The good, the bad, the ugly
The Shining (1980)
Das Boot (1981)
Terminator 2: Judgement day (1991)
Pulp fiction (1994)
American history X (1998)
Fight Club (1999)
Memento (2000)
Shrek (2001)
The Others (2001)
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
(EDIT)
I have a book and movie log here:
http://www.strandmark.com/culture.shtml
Some...
Brazil
Return of the Living Dead
My Fair Lady
Maltese Falcon
Godfather trilogy
Decline Of Western Civilization (1st one)
The Shining
A Night At The Opera
A River Runs Through It
The Man Who Would Be King
Casablanca
Desperate Living
Behind The Green Door
North By Northwest
The Man Who Knew Too Much
Best Of Show
The Quiet Man
Singing In The Rain
Tremors
Schindler's List
Manchurian Candidate
Lots more I can't think of offhand, or remember the titles, anyway. They're all good movies, and unique, not cookie cutter crap. Or, at least cheezy enough to know it if they are. I've got to comment on S-D's choice of Seventh Seal, though. I had to watch that in class, and a more depressingly boring movie probably can't be made. A completely incomprehensible movie is 8 1/2.
Super Hornio Brothers 2 - Let's Boink
K19
Das Boot
Saving Private Ryan
There's no way I could possibly remember/list all of my favorite movies so I'll list a few.
American History X
Dumb and Dumber
American Pie 2
American Beauty
Happy Gilmore
Lord of the Rings: 2
The Animal
Saving Private Ryan
The Matrix
Those are just some of the movies that I think are really cool. As you can tell most of them aren't exactly "high quality" movies, except for a few of them.
I think it is very difficult to pick one favourite movie..
Shawshank Redemption
A Christamas Story (I think thats the name, its from the early 80s)
Terminator
Behind Enemy Lines
Fight Club
there are more, just cant think of the names now..
Titanic.
Nightmare Before Christmas.
Mars Attacks.
Edward Scissorhands.
American History X. (Seems like there're a lot of people who like it)
Requiem For A Dream.
Toy Story.
The Lion King.
More Recently:
Gangs of New York.
Tim Burton's my favorite...
I do too, the first one (NBC) was cool, but I didnt think much of your other 2 selections.......I prefered Sleepy Hollow......oh and Ed Wood was cool tooQuote:
Nightmare Before Christmas.
Mars Attacks.
Edward Scissorhands.
Tim Burton's my favorite...
As for good films;
Star Wars Saga
Raging Bull (Excellent film)
LOTR (Fellowship & Towers were unbeatable IMO)
Akira (dunno....cant get it out of my mind right now)
Godfather I & II (not III)
Goodfellas
True Romance
Shawshank Redemption
Gettysburg
Few Good Men
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
LOTR (both so far)
Toy Story
Aliens
American Beauty
Memento
Shrek
Truman Show
Adaptation
Sixth Sense
Errr... these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head!
'the sixth sense' figures in nobody's list !!! oh, well ! ...
Boondock Saints
Dune/Dune 2000
Baseketball
Strange Brew
"The Man" (student directed comedy)
Without further ado, here they are:
A Beautiful Mind and Good Will Hunting because I like movies about math geniuses:)
Forrest Gump and Mr. Holland's Opus because I really like how they trace a man's life through several decades.
I can somewhat understand why someone wouldn't like The Seventh Seal. It's not a movie for everybody, but I wouldn't call it a bad movie. It had great acting and cinematography. The plot was really deep, too, which is why you and I have been made to watch it in school. I actually liked it. It would've been better if it didn't have white subtitles. I couldn't read them half the time
I liked Seventh Seal, that was actually a really good movie. Watch it in school, though? Seems like an odd movie to show in school...
Super Hornio Brothers on the other hand, that's a school movie
Apocalypse Now is most certainly my favorite movie. I love that movie.
In no particular order:
LOTR: The Two Towers
LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring
The Sixth Sense
The Matrix
Elizabeth
Aliens
White Christmas
X-Men
Gladiator
Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius
Princess Mononoke
Armageddon
Hot Shots!
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
The Seven Samurai
Shadow of the Vampire
The Return of the King (80s animated version)
Spaceballs
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
Psycho
12 Monkeys
American Beauty
Fight Club
Godfather
Shrek
Apocalypse Now
Movies I despise (I either walked out, desperately wanted to, or turned off the video before they were done):
The Blair Witch Project (utter waste of celluloid)
Dumb and Dumber
Rush Hour II
Fargo
Eyes Wide Shut
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
>>'the sixth sense' figures in nobody's list !!! oh, well ! ...<<
Not true, I mentioned it :D

Haven't seen yet: American Beauty
Acctually it's one of the best movies I've ever seen, I also like:Quote:

Rambo 1-3
Terminator 1,2 (and soon 3)
Spiderman
12 Monkeys
Gladiator
American History X (very interesting -> the background, the setting)
.
.
.
And a lot of other movies, but to list them would be a lot of brainwork -> to remember the titles .. .. . . . . blah blah
Movies, the delights of visual dreams!
Since everyone else is putting in their two cents worth, I might as well also...more so since the topic is on movies...
These are listed in no particular order...also beware that I am a girl and love fantasy movies...
The Matrix
Sleeping Beauty
Princess Bride
True Lies
The Great Escape
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
The Fugitive
All three Indian Jones movies
Anne of Avenlea
Eep, there are more...but can I think of them? No...not at this time!
The are my all time favorites:
Star Wars
Scarface
Carlito's Way
Sixth Sense

The actors, and the director were good, but I didn't like the way it was dealing with hackers...
yeah I hate movies which are like that. Like in Die another Day, he un plugs the camera and it makes some weird electronic noise. And when he's typing on his computer it makes a beek for each key press. And their GUI's are always sleek and metalic blue.
Hackers
Band of Brothers ( not exactly one movie, but great nevertheless )
Interview with a Vampire
Hello Mr. President
Die Hard I & II
Apocalypse Now
Speed
Ghost in the Shell ( Manga/Anime )
Pulp Fiction
BraveHeart
Shawshank Redemption
La Vita È Bella
Tillsammans
Amelie
I like their GUI's. I want one.Quote:

Although that when Stanley is writing that worm, it looks totally unrealistic, the whole cube concept and everything. LMAO.
That's wxaclty what I meant, but I didn't remember the name...Quote:

I would really like to see a movie that deals with hackers in a very realistic way, to show what the real thing is...
It wouldn't be very spectacular to watch a real hacker typing at some linux console in a dark basement.Quote:

I'm afraid the real thing is too undramatic.
But I hate the Swordfish style even more, when the hacker is looking at seven screens with rotating cubes while typing like 10 chars/s and everything he does is reflected on the screens with ulta-cool 3d-animations.
Ooh, forgot about that one! Patlabor 2 is also pretty nice. :)Quote:
Ghost in the Shell ( Manga/Anime )
Can't wait for Ghost in the Shell 2 though!
Oops, forgot the funniest comedy of all time:
South Park the Movie!!
Geez, still laugh everytime I think of some of the quotes and songs from that movie! :p
howdy,
coma
the firm
andromidan(sp) strain
who killed roger rabbit
guess that kind of dates me.

Doesn't anyone else like older movies, pre 70's-80's? There were lots of great movies made in the 30's, 40's and 50's. Yes, most of them were black and white. So? Directors used that to their advantage, especially in film noir. Ashphalt Jungle, Double Indemnity, The Apartment, On The Waterfront, bunches more I remember scenes and plots from but not names offhand.
I know a lot of people on the board are teens or very early twenties, but come on!
I don't want to trash other people's choices, no matter how much some may deserve it :D , but a lot of good movies were made prior to 1985 or 1990. Heck, even Saturday Night Fever is a good iconic movie for its time.
As far as movies go, Pulp Fiction.
There aren't very many movies around that i think are truely good movies.
My definition of good movie - A movie that i can watch all the way through and not lose interest in, even during the more boring parts of the rising action.

You want people who watch older movies? You should meet some freinds of mine! When they were younger their parents wouldn't let them watch any movies that wern't G...that left out most of the newer stuff.
Thanks to them I was introduced to Harvey, Oklahoma, Hello Dolly, Thouroughly Modern Milly(It's a scream!), Diamonds are a Girls Best freind, and a host of others who's names have traveled into obscurity.
I love old movies, they have a magic that most of the movies now don't have.

If by 'magic' you mean plot and good acting then I agree. :D
Though I tend to stick with books, my list of favorite movies is sorted by actors:
Movies with Steve Martin (funny), Sean Connery (too cool), and Jean Claude van Damme (swoon ;)). I prefer any kind of comedy or anything *ahem* attention grabbing. :D
-Prelude
That's right. Plot, cinematography, acting, direction, yada yada, were all more important then than stuff like making $100 million the first couple weeks, explosions, special effects, etc. Those movies are ok, fun to watch, but in a few years they'll look like an original Nintendo game. What movies will be watched in 100 years? Casablanca or Armageddon? Could someone with a name and face like Humphrey Bogart be a star today? I doubt it, but he was one of the greatest actors the movies have seen.Quote:

Time to once again post everything noone has ever heard of.
Mostly anything Lucio Fulci
New York Ripper
Zombie
Versus
Nonosonno (pretty sure it's italian for I can't sleep providing I spelled the title right)
Battle Royale
I kinda like the Harry Potter Movies, I like magic and medieval stuff
Princess Bride
that's enough for now...........
edit: ^^^^^^
yes, battle royale! and while on the topic of cheesy imports, shaolin soccer!
No love for Army of Darkness? :(
- Army of Darkness. mmm.
- Alien, Aliens
- Die Hard
- The Matrix
- The Sixth Sense
- Shawshank Redemption
Also Road Warrior and others... I like it when the cars go boom and people shoot each other with the guns.
This flys in the face of your previous comment regarding plot and good acting. :)Quote:
and Jean Claude van Damme (swoon ).
The Matrix
AntiTrust
Swordfish
LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring
A Beautiful Mind (might sound gay, but good)
Saving Private Ryan
John Q
Risky Buisness
>> AntiTrust
That movie was crap for one reason. This guy's amazing OS was written in Java. Not only was this not possible (a true OS cannot be written in Java) but its stupid.
"Also Road Warrior and others..."
Loved those movies. As I was filing through my mind(trying to think up some of my favorite movies) I somehow passed them by, action movies are truly riveting. Goes to show that fights, shooting, flaming cars, and a good jaw crunch never grows dull!
I can't believe it... noone said some of my favorite movies... The Last of the Mohicans, Entire James Bond Series(My Favorites: Goldfinger, Goldeneye), Alien Series(1 and 2 were the best), Gorillas in the Myst, The Hunt for Red October, The Fugitive and Congo(Even though the book was 100% BETTER).
Edit: Oh and Indy Jones, Mission Impossible, Mothman Prophecies, Me Myself and Irene, Halloween and The Shining. There all done.
It's possible, in fact, it's been done.Quote:

In terms of "realistic fiction" computer movies, I think antitrust was one of the better and more realistic ones. That's not really saying much though considering its competition is movies like "The Net" and *cringes* "Hackers."
oooooooooooooooooooooohhhh.... The Net, how could I forget this one on my list *g*
Is it realistic ? Not quite, but better than most. Does it feature Sandra Bullock ? Yes. So what :D
ggs....man i completely forgot about that. I swear i'm one of the biggest bruce campbell fans. I actually got meet him last halloween at his book signing and got his book, evil dead one and 2, aod.... it was great, I have a few pictures from it, i had a blast
>> I think antitrust was one of the better and more realistic ones
Uhh...yeah very realistic. I think some of the most reaistic parts were where the dude had secret cameras in every good programmer's bedroom, I liked the fact that the cameras enabled the viewer to pefectly read small letters from a computer screen at an angle of 45 degrees... Oh yeah, and I totally believed the part where the dude has cameras inside soda machines and that people were watching the cameras at the exact moment that the other dude was near it...
[/sarcasm]
I met him at MSU when he was making Evil Dead. If you like that one, check out Return of The Living Dead. Kind of a satire on the Night of the Living Dead. Had some great lines. In one scene, a bunch of punk rockers are walking down the street, and one says "Hey, where's Bill?" "Bill got a job." "A job!! What a d**k!"Quote:

Ha, yeah, that's why I said "in comparison to other fictional computer movies"Quote:

"Hackers" movie logic: "Let's hack into the school computer and make the sprinklers go off" [sarcasm]... Because we all know that they're hooked up to the internet...[/sarcasm] Or how about at the end when the guy is working with that 3D interface watching his code get hacked, at least I think that's what was happening, I forget. There were so many other stupid things, but I've tried to push that movie out out of my brain as it was taking a dump on my imagination.
The Matrix
Lord Of The Rings
Harry Potter
Fight Club
X-Men
Waiting for the other 'Matrix' movies, to be released this year. Matrix rocks!
You know, I think the TV show "Alias" (the greatest show ever
created) is the most accurate when dealing with computers.
On tonight's episode (spoilers ahead) Marshall actually used "ping"
to alert SD-6 to his position (he was captured, and his captors
wanted him to write a program. Which he did, but when they
started the program, it turned out he wrote PONG. Then he
started laughing at them. Almost got killed. Very funny)..
Anyway, the people at SD-6 traced the IP address to Mexico
City (I think that's where it was) and rescued Marshal.

Edit: Here's a thread on their forums that talks about the
computer stuff.... http://sd-1.com/boards/index.php?act...64e2308c383766
Late in the game (so to speak):
The Great Escape
Enemy At the Gates
The American President
Fort Apache
Roman Holiday
Lawrence of Arabia
The Blue Max
Twelve O'Clock High
The Yellow Rolls-Royce
The Song of Bernadette (So, sue me!)
Bullitt (Ahh...my first car!)
Many others have already been named.

My favorites:
High Fidelity
Fight Club
Almost Famous
American Beauty
Casablanca
The Truman Show
and others...
Yesterday, I saw Unusuall Suspects, it's a great movie...
>>Hackers
That's one of the worst movies I've ever seen...
Even Sword Fish is better than Hackers...
