    Love programming, hate computers

I've come to the conclusion that I absolutely love programming with a passion, but could really care less about computers whatsoever. I mean, to me a computer is just a tool that allows me to program and other odd jobs like games or internet, nothing more. I've never had the desire to open one up to see how it ticks, nor do I care about constantly upgrading it. I know diddly squat about processors or chips or boards etc nor do I really want to know.

I was wondering, am I in the minority? It seems like most programmers I know treat their computers as though its a loved one, and constantly brag about all the new and great things their computer can do and how efficient such-and-such componant is. What sayest the rest of you?

my computer is my friend, i try to treat it nicely.
But it does come down to it being a tool, for gods sake i spent weeks compiling on a 486 this summer. But i think your tool (computer ) should be upgraded to what you feel passionate to use it for, like my next one for instance is going to be for programming and audio editing. Really, I believe that for many people a computer can be an extension of their personality, from their desktop background, to their startup sounds, to their homepages.....we're really one giant happy MS family

back to reality....it's just a tool
    PHP and XML
    Let's talk about SAX

No, you're not in the minority. My computer is also simply a tool. A demonic, possessed, evil, vile, hateful one to be sure, but just a tool.

But just as with any other tool, the bigger, badder, and more testosterone filled it is, the more envious your friends are, and the easier it is to pick up chicks. So this obviously means that even if I only wanted to do word processing on my computer I would still get excited about the new 3 Ghz systems and I would definatly want at least an 80 Gig HD with 512 MB RAM because any less would make me less of a man.

... Okay... So were you looking for a serious response?

Honestly though, I want to do what I do as fast as possible. This means that more RAM, and a higher processor speed makes me really happy. Less time wasted waiting for things to happen, more time spent making them do so.

My computer is my canvas, thats how i like to see it. As waldo said its a way for me to express myself in both its look, performance, "personality", programs, etc.

I have always been truley fascinated with computers, how they work, and how to make my friends look more pathetic then mine. I would rather make my p3500 mhz with the 20gig kick butt in a lan party then use my high-end p4 system. In fact i don't think i have EVER used the p4 for anything but daily computing.

LOL, whats sad is that I know people who actually believe this!

I do agree though that the faster the better. I hate having to wait for the computer the *think*. Other than that though, as long as it works...

I have a simular theory on internet connections. I hate wasting my time. How did that quote from 'A Beautiful Mind' go? When he gets up in front of his class and says something like:

"I believe this class to be a collosal waste of your time, and what is infinitly more important; My time."

heh. Not entirely relevant, but I liked it.

P.S. Nice new sig there Ride.

I wouldnt say that I love my computer, but I do treat it with respect. I kiss it before I go to bed, and make sure Im extra nice to it, especially on those days that I forget to turn it off. I dont want to put my computer to sleep one day, and not have it wake up the next day.

Plus wouldnt you love to go up to a chick, and go my hard drive is bigger than his?

    I knod you do.

I live my computers, but many don't, it's not nessesary that you love computers to become a good programmer.
Almost all the CS professors are not good computer users.
    none...

And that's the difference between Computer Engineers and Computer Scientists. My compiler's my tool. My computer's my child.

:to computer: Don't worry about what they said, baby, I'm sure they weren't talking to you...
