    Bill showing off...

My networking teacher just got a new play toy that he had to torment us with: a dual xeon server with 4 gig of rambus and a raid 5 hard disk array. Doesn't it just make you drool over the raw power in the thing?

He must have spent thousands. In a couple of years it will be out of date.

I recall when I got my 486 DX & 4MB of RAM and 110MB hard-disc. It blew anyone elses machine out of the water (for a few weeks).

$6800 (or so he says). Its being used to replace the 700 mhz pc currently used as the faculty server.

You probably need fast computers if you do high-end 3d modelling/rendering etc work.

I feel your pain, adamviper. I code on a 100 mhz pentium. I know that it's better than a 486, but it still sucks in a big way. Oh well, this spring I get to build one (finally got financial backing).

why in the hell would you buy from alienware? they are way over priced, build yourself and with the money you've saved you can actually buy a monitor or maybe a few extra hard drives or a book or (the list goes on)...

EDIT: my local computer stores sells the exact same systems (same cases and everything) except they come with a monitor and they end up costing an average of $150 less, and you could do even better if you built it yourself.
