Dropping out of school

Ok...I know someone on these boards, who will remian nameless, I'll call him Bob cause I like the name and it's easy to type.

Bob has just told that he intends to drop out of high school. I don't think it's a good idea. He feels that he isn't intellegent, which I disagree with. He programs. He is very good at programing, within the amount he has learned...all of which he has taught himself, since like many schools, his offers little-nothing for computer.

He is having trouble in a class or two, but I don't think that's a reason to drop out.

Does anyone else have an opinion about whether he should drop out or not? I've made mine clear.

you're better off staying in school. education sets you up for a bright future young fellow. else you'll make it harder on yourself now. you'd best channel all your energies into your studies before you don't have the choice to do so, and you don't have anymore energy...

I think dropping out of high school is the dumbest thing Bob can do. I have a couple of friends that dropped out and now they're stuck working at dead-end jobs at bookstores. He should get through the couple of classes he needs to get through and go to college, especially if he's good at programming.

As for the problems with a few classes, some complete airheads can get through high school. If he's smart enough to program, hes smart enough to pass high school math/english/history/science...

He should not drop out of highschool.

My mom, who is a highschool teacher, has asked me on several occasions(I'm 21, soon to be 22) to come into her classroom and talk to her kids about staying in school. Well, actually, she's thought about it, ...never really asked. Anyhow, do not do it!!! I have, and it ain't the way to go!!!!! Employment will be a nightmare. You'll be stuck in jobs where the employer does not give a crap about you.

Luckily for me, I'm pretty smart, so I got into a tech school as a highschool drop out and it's the 3rd in our state for tech schools(Uinversities don't count). They get things done fast, and apparently have a high success rate. Again, I was lucky to get in. Do not drop out. Stay in school and build up an excellent rap sheet of good things.

If Bob's got an ego that big, well, he's going to mess up somewhere along the line regardless, but he's definately better off staying in school. I would end with some cheesy pun, but I think I made my point.

Easy, drop out of high school: close to 0% opportunities for success in life. Even if you are the exact same person with or without the diploma, nobody will take you seriously. No reason to screw up the next 30-60 years of your life because you can't handle sitting through a couple of teachers lectures right now.

Bob (can I change that to "Fred"? "Bob" just reminds me of "Microsoft Bob"), or Fred, whichever you prefer, you really should stay in high-school. I know a few people who dropped out of high-school (or attend but not make any effort to do anything), they are now putting false hope into really cruddy jobs.

Also, "Bob" should NOT drop out of school regardless of "Bob's" situation.

Bob, that's an easy one. Stay.

I'm shifting through a lot of CVs for programming positions and people who dropped out of (the german equivalent of) Highschool get sorted out first. I don't mind if you failed classes. I don't care if you weren't good in school. What counts is you stayed, found out what you were good at, and made that your career. Actually, to get a job with us this should better be programming or math, but you get the point.

People don't really care if you are good. Bad grades or failed courses show you tried. Everyone makes mistakes and most learn from them. Dropping out is the easy way, the dark side if you will, and people don't employ those that can't handle difficulties.

If the only reason was that you're not doing well in some courses, you should not consider that at all.
For example I'm studying copmputer sciences in a university, I have a good GPA which puts me in the honoring list, but still I'm having some problems with some courses( university requirments ), but overall it's OK, don't expect to be good at everything.
And since you are good at programming, you can study computer sciences after you finish highschool, and beleive me it's great.
Just think carefully before you take a serious step, because it will affesct your whole life.

Definitely do NOT drop out of school. You say say that your school doesn't cater for computer people, well get this..... I was 17 before I learnt how to write an e-mail!! My school was living in the stone age, it had computers but didn't think it necessary to teach people to use them. A business studies student taught me how to write that e-mail. Then when I started programming in university just before turning 19, I thought you wrote C++ in MS-DOS!! My point is, if you enjoy programming and want to do it, it's never too late to laern. Stay at school, put some effort in and get half decent grades in core subjects like maths and science. Doing that will open many doors for you. Don't worry that you think you are unintelligent, many employers look favourably upon people who aren't natural geniuses but get good grades through hard work and dedication. Of course dropping out demonstrates the exact opposite, lack of commitment to anything.

I said this to a friend, a fellow senior in high school, and its what kept him from dropping, simple as it is:

You have spent the last 11 or so years of your life in school, meeting people, teachers, and creating friendships. But all that aside, you are in your last year of high school, why the hell would you drop out now rather then live it out and feel like you finally completed something worth while?

I dont understand why people would want to drop out of school. What are they going to do with rest of their lives? Bob, I say try your hardest for the next half year that you have left, or year and a half, and you will be proud that you stuck with it.

Yea man, at least get your high school diploma! You don't need to go to college - a lot of people just don't think colleges is right for them, and that's their decision, but high school is something you shouldn't pass up!
