Do you like or hate pdf's of not really care.
Hate!
I see no advantage with it. It's slow, worthless scrolling, you can't copy text, annoying zooming...
Long live notepad!
.PDF Sucks so much!!!
This was a Public Service announcement from your GOD!!!
how can anyone hate all of Adobe!!! Photoshop rules!
And no you're not God. I'm closer to that than you!
I do like photoshop.
If they didn't have all that bloody overhead, they might not be that bad. Right now, they're still that bad.
Side: Anyone know of a free pdf editor/creator?
Useless.....Photoshop is quite good though.
When you search for information on google and sees a pdf in the list of result, click it.
It is more work to convert the information into pdf format, so chances are good that the information is useful.
pdf sucks, but when you save your documents in pdf format they'll look more useful and professional.
>>Anyone know of a free pdf editor/creator?<<
I think the idea is that there isn't one. The reader is free but the writer costs a bomb, hence the origin of Adobe's income.
And sometimes, not being able to cut and paste is a good thing. Prevents plaigarism(sp).

I can see that from the companies point of view, but it sure sucks for the rest of us :)
what are you talking about!? is everyone always drunk/on drugs when they post here?Quote:

pdfs are made up of searchable text. how do yahoo! and other google-powered sites search for text in pdfs if this wasn't true? there are many pdf text extractors out there, although i can only think of pdf2txt
thank you! i've been waiting for someone to notice that. (no offense, govtcheez... ;))Quote:

Sometimes it can be annoying since the files can be large, and take a long time to load, although most do contain usefull information. Sometimes I just view them as html, makes a mess out of it, but loads a lot faster.
I know with photoshop, you can make a photo into a pdf file, but I have never tried text.
says who?Quote:
govtcheez will be banned
arghh.... i'm deleting all senseless posts on this thread. if you have an issue with govtcheez, pm him or another mod.
>>you can't copy text
Yes you can. On one condition, that the creator of the pdf didn't dissable it in his sicurity form.
In acrobat reader, ther is a button with a 'T' on it, press it, select your text and copy it to the clipboard. Same goes for images (that's a diffrent button I think)
I like PDF's. I'm making a webaplication with a database and I need to print out some nice forms for customers (with comapny logo etc. ) and I'm going from php to pdf. That way it is easyer to print from a html document (and much nicer).
But reading a book from pdf sucks. I can't keep my concentration for more then one page. I still prefer the paper version
>>Sometimes it can be annoying since the files can be large
Usualy (sp?) pdf's are much smaller then the original document
maybe on a side note, but if anyone is interested in program that converts html to pdf, try "HTMLDOC". I use it when I save a webpage. that way, you won't have that directory with files and stuff, just one pdf file
thats not that bright, not all end-users have the pdf reader installed on their computer, thats the main reason for html(portablility)Quote:
that way, you won't have that directory with files and stuff, just one pdf file
When I save html pages, that is for my personal use.
Besides I think it is a very small persentage of th users that don't have the reader. (could be wrong, personal opinion)
PDF is so widly used these days.
also, an other advantage of to PDF is the data integrity, when you encrypt something, it is much harder for other users to change it. (not like a txt or word doc.
edit:
>>hats the main reason for html(portablility)
you can't compare HTML with PDF, they are both totaly different things
you dont understand me, you said u saved ur html files as one pdf file, that give me the right to compare themQuote:
you can't compare HTML with PDF, they are both totaly different things
yeah, I use them for offline viewing or when I need to printout a website. In that case, maybe you can compare them. But I thought you meant with online viewing, as in an alternative to html and a webbrowser. My mistake ;)
Convert your documents to pdf here:

Another way of creating PDF-files with free tools is using GhostScript.
A lot of information is available on the internet in PDF-documents. Just search for "filetype:pdf <topic>" to get a lot of PDF-documents about that topic. And also PDF-reader is free available for download. And also you can store PDF-documents on your harddisk to read later or to send to collegues or friends. These are the main reasons why I am not against PDF.
It has some good thigs such as:
It has good formatting.
You would like if you are creating the file.
And bad things:
It is large in size.
Sometimes PRINT is disabled.
Cannot copy text.
The reader itself isn't that good.
with all the bad things about it, why not just use .txt, its cross-platform, doesnt require a single reader to read it.......just seems like the best solution
In txt-files you can't put nice things like pictures, links, URL's and other usefull stuff.
ok maybe i was a bit hasty inmy poll but photoshop is kinda good but i never was one who liked doing graphics.
No it's not!Quote:

Windows and Unix use different new-line sequences! HTML and pdf don't have this problem.
SOMETIMES IT SUCKS, BUT THAT'S VERY OFTEN *g*
It's like viewing a bitmap, also you scroll like hell to get it 1
page down, i think you must master the viewer for it
to like using pdf's
I hate pdfs. Why can't everyone just use html? That would allow for pictures and links. I hate that I can't edit pdfs, especially cut and paste. I was writing a paper once, and I wanted to quote a study in pdf format and I couldn't use cut. That really womped.
I also know that pdfs make life much more difficult for investigative reporters. They can't do diddly squat with a whole bunch of reports in pdf 'cuz they're too big not to use an application, but their apps can't use pdfs. My friend's dad was asking me about this, and I didn't know what to tell him besides how much pdfs really suck.
