    The purpose of school

What do you guys think about school? Do you think you will end up using a lot of the stuff you are learning? How important do you think it is to have a society that forces the children to go to school. I think school is a very good thing. I dont' always like it, but overall I think it is good. I think a lot of the stuff is in one ear, out the other, but school can build character and in ways it is a microcosm (sp?) of society and the 'real world'.

    Ok post your thoughts.

it all depends on the school. i'm all for college, when i finally go. and elementary schools are usually fun to be in. but middle school and high school...i can honestly say that a lot of classes i've taken have had no impact on me at all. if there was any impact, it was because of a teacher, or the students, or some interesting subject matter (a rare possibility).

the thing i really hate about school, other than the spirit-crushing rules, are teachers who insist on writing out all notes in verbatim. especially after getting up at 6:30 to get to school on time.

I'm currently in grade 11, and I find that a lot of the knowledge I get in school (esp. math and computers) helps me out. But I think that the course that I'm getting the most out of is drama, because it makes me comfortable to get up in front of people and talk or do strange things.

School is supposed to do more than prepare you for a specific career, though. One objective is to produce well-rounded citizens who will make wise choices when it comes to voting, etc. Honestly, high school doesn't give you an in-depth course in anything. It's about getting basic background information, an overview. It helps you to figure out what you want to do, too. It's a sampler.

It's for sure that schools are important even some subjects like history will add to your general knowlege, but that doesn't mean I like it, actually I hate schools very much, I'm now sophomore in a university studying computer sciences, and it's much better!

Most teaching institutions don't teach very specific subjects. The goal is to give the pupils the chance to go to any field they like and specialize further. To be able to do so, you need a very wide field of knowledge. First and foremost people need to know how to learn and research. That sounds stupid, but techniques for learning should be the first thing taught. How to get knowledge all by yourself. How to use a library and to an extend how to use the net, which is like a huge electronic library.

Take CS as an example. Very often, the question pops up: what languages do you know ?

I don't know what to answer. I know many languages basics. I'm expert with some. But the most important thing is to know the general things. Those that won't get your programm written, but enable you to learn another language fast. If C** gets delivered tomorrow, how many could use a totally foreign language ? Mastering one special thing is fine, but a broad general knowlegde prepares for change and there is one thing you can neither ignore nor stop: change.

The broader your education, the better you can adapt to changes. And I hope this is taught at schools.

She was so Blonde, she spent 20 minutes looking at the orange juice can because it said "Concentrate."

When in doubt, read the FAQ.
    Then ask a smart question.
