| Ghost in the CD Drive Ever since I added a CD writer about 6 months ago my first CD drive has been acting up. The button on the front doesn't work (have to use eject in explorer to open the damn thing), and it opens and closes at will. The opening and closing is completely random. Sonetimes it'll be fine for a couple of weeks, then it'll open and close evey 5 minutes for the next month... The jumpers on both drives are set and are being recognised perfectly... I've sorta learned to live with it now, but any ideas would be appreciated, thanks... |

| well...yesterday i saw this magic book at the book store that had lots of new spells in it. In fact, it had the new Black Magic 7.0 spells ![]() Opening and closing the cdrom was a 4.0 spell...just say these words while waving your hands at the cdrom: tu es meum servus That should fix the problem. |

| I have never heard of yo soy un mono azul before, Ken. Is it the new spell book...i havent read all the spells yet. I am on page 56 where it talks about taking over Microsoft and other non-homosapian empires using this spell: EGO NON TERRAN PETO |

| a few options that could be a trojan true, but it's also likely you either have jumpers set wrong or some sort of software glitch in the driver, my friend had a very similar problem after installing a dvd drive and he found it to be one of those (he wasn't sure which because he tried to fix them both at once) try checking your cables 100x, and uninstall-reinstall your drivers |

| A trojan couldn't affect the button on the front of the drive could it? Surely that's completely internal... cozman: I assumed a jumper/driver conflicty initially too, and have done what you suggest a couple of times now... I'm still thinking that it's a problem related to that though, 'cause if I remove the CD-R drive it fixes the problem and everything works fine... Cheers for the suggestions and the spells... I would try them but my computer sits right beside a window... |

And if that does not work you might try hitting it, that always works.

If you right click a cdrom in windows you have an option to "eject". This can be emulated with code, I dont have an example, but I think ken posted something on the Windows board a while back.....or was that the old board?? |

| The resolution is simple: hardware firms (which will probably affect software industry as well) got real troubles because of guys like you. You'd learn it now, and learn it well: if your piece of hardware doesn't work, this means, it has expired, and you've got to buy a new one. Warning: never call the service! Don't try to repair it by yourself. Just buy, buy, buy!!! ![]() That's how modern economies work! Thanks for your support! Now seriously, there are two possibilities: 1. It might be a hardware error. If so, you'd rather buy a DVD-ROM or a new CDROM-drive (I guess, TEAC is the best buy-not cheap, though). 2. Software problem Quote:
Just look at your TaskManager, isn't there present such a thingie.

I guess it makes sense about the button on the front, I assume it just sends an eject request to the OS? Explorer's eject is the only way I have to control the drive at the moment. Not to worry though, just 'cause my computer has a mind of it's own is nothing to fret over.... unless of course you've seen the Matrix...

| I'd suggest you to boot up with a simple DOS-floppy(no CDROM support), then try to eject the tray via "Eject" button. If this still fails, then you *really* got a HW problem...then buy a new CDD (TEAC is the best!). Quote:
Assume that before ejecting, the internal drive logic (firmware) checks whether ejecting is possible/allowed (some flag which can be programatically set, if you know the correct port address and values). Now, ejecting through eject button fails, that's why: 1. you probably have some funny background software messing with your CDD 2. there is a hardware error Try the DOS-boot, and let me know, pls! | I had a Creative iNfra 52X which had a similar problem, I discarded the trojan or virus, because it also happened while on the BIOS setup, it wasn't a jumper, because I never messed with them, but I looked for it in a magic book and found the mono azul spell in the CD-ROM trouble section. I repeated soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul soy un mono azul but I finally ended up beleiving I was a blue monkey (strange) and my CDROM was still messed up but I found out another spell which said you had to say soy un pendejo que tiene que botar esta unidad de CD a la basura 1000 times, I did it and It got fixed!!!, I did what I had to do... I threw it to the garbage!!! you should say those words. by the way, I now have a GOOD cd drive, and before i plugged it in, I went to a priest so he could bless it.. Oskilian |
