    Everquest Addiction on 48 Hours...

I just saw 48 hours' report on Everquest Addiction. It was pretty
much about that mother who's suing Sony because her son
commited suicide after something bad happened to his EQ character.
She thinks Sony should include a "Warning: May Be Addictive"
    sticker on the package.

They also interviewed Ben Stein. Apparently his son was addicted
to the game, too. He [Ben Stein] thinks Sony should discontinue
    Everquest...

I don't play the game, but I still think this is stupid. Govtcheez
posted the original article a few months ago -- and I'll say exactly
    what I said in that thread. There should be no warning sticker;
there should be no discontinuation of the game; this shouldn't
    even be an issue.

Even if it did cause addiction in some people -- that's a psychological
addiction. Everything has the potential to cause a psychological
addictioin. People's minds differ too much; there's no way to tell
what they may or may not be addicted to. It isn't reasonable to
say that we should put a warning label on things that have had
people psychologically addicted to them; People can be addicted
to anything. Pretty soon everything will have a warning sticker
    on it.

There should only be warnings on things that are chemically
addictive; like cigarettes. I'm even willing to go as far as caffeine,
but not video games. That's just crazy.

Edit: Oh yeah. Apparently Ben Stein sent his son to boarding
school to get him away from Everquest (or so I remember)...

This site needs a warning sticker...
    Try not.
    Do or do not.
    There is no try.

    >There should only be warnings on things that are chemically
    addictive;

There are no fewer than 28 warning stickers at each end of the esculators in Dublin airport. I know, because I counted them, while thinking 'who the hell is going to look at all them!'.

On most items/services warning stickers are not there to protect people. They're only to cover the asses of the providing companies in a court.

Putting a warning on a computer game to say, 'WARNING: This game is highly addictive'. Is not going to protect anyone, in fact it will only serve as a commercial.

On a related note, here's a short story I read on the BBC website recently:

A man has been found dead after playing computer games non-stop for 86 hours.
According to reports, the 24-year-old South Korean identified only by his last name Kim, died at an internet café in Kwangju, 160 miles south-west of Seoul.
In a salutary warning to gaming addicts, Korean police say the man had been at his computer since last Friday and had not eaten or slept since.
It is believed he collapsed in the café and was later found dead in the toilet.

Its sick what u can sue for now a days. I saw a bumper sticker a lil while back that said

"If you can read this then i can slam on my brakes and sure you."

    Sad thing, its true.
