    I have a question

It seems to me that trolls and such are tolerated very much in this board. Take troll_king for example (no relation whatsoever to me by the way.) He constantly post insulting, offensive, stupid or meaningless comments. What does he add to this community? Humor? I think that people should think of the newbies getting insulted and possibly discouraged from programming in general. He says some actually useful things ocasionally, but most of his posts are useless rants, empty threats, or stupid banter. Look:
    Newbie Question
Ok. Now how immature was that? For an entire community to simply ignore these immature rantings is quite strange. I once posted 3-5 posts in another forum that was slightly... mean, and I had to work for about a year to earn back the respect of the cummunity, and there are those who still don't like me (http://www.elysiun.com). I've seen an amazing level of newbie posts here. Not just posts of people who are just starting out, those are fine, but posts with subjects saying "HELP ME NOW!!!!" or "SOMEBODY DO THIS HOMEWORK PLZZZZ!" The moderators tend to lazily say "Be more specific or something like that. These lazy noobs need to actually ask, not demand. Why doesn't a mod delete the thread? I knew somebody on another board who got banned for 5 days because they said something rude, no cursing or anything. So why do people who not only act rude and stupid not only got ignored, but encouraged and liked? I've not been here THAT long, since the old forums, and I can easily say that I've noticed a rise in spam and flames. Why put up with this useless crap? The moderators need to do their job more.

I agree that there's a certain amount of things people seem to get away with too easily. It's a shame people have to talk crap in the wrong places, when in other places they seem to have good ideas and opinions.

And yes, the PLEASE HELP ME NOW posts are a real annoyance There's a ton of other things that people do that p you off too, like bumping.

If I get to become a mod (unlikely, I know ), I'll work towards eradicating these types of things.

OMG, was that a plug for the election, was I campaigning? Damn, I said I wasn't going to do that.

    Yeah, you're right.

We should be chained to this site 24 hours day.

We should really enforce the rules harsher, like people that do this. Don't whine about people breaking the rules until you're prepared to follow them yourself.

There's all sorts of things that people do wrong, but banning people will drive them away from the site faster than any annoying newbies...

But'd that'd mean Ken would have to unchain you from his bed post first, and he wouldn't be happy about that.

    >>Don't whine about people breaking the rules until you're prepared to follow them yourself.
I am following them, I think I'm sure you'll tell me if I'm not.

    >>but banning people will drive them away
Agreed, but I must say I don't see a lot of moderator intervention. Sometimes all people need is a push in the right direction, like "hey, don't bump your threads", or "use a meaning thread title in future". I know regular users post messages like this (I do), but I'm sure it'd sound better coming from a mod. Maybe it goes on and I just miss it. Or maybe it's a good thing to keep a _low profile_?

Anyways, haven't we already have this convo? (in that thread by Prelude).

Well, whatever it was, it went over my head.

Are you refering about me? What are you on about here? I think I've missed your point completely.

Cheap hookers are always welcome. But you're right, as many as you send, I'll always want more

The intent of this board is not to create a nice, politically correct enviroment, but to discuss C, C++, and derivatives. Speech is allowed so long as it doesn't disrupt general life here.

Yes, you're right. The example with trollking should not have been tolerated. I think most mods left it alone because the newbie had a sense of humor and a thick skin. (Or maybe he knew trollking in advance...)

The one sure way of getting action against a thread is to click on the "Report Post" link.

As a general rule we have a light touch. When a certain member gets rampantly ignorant, we/(I?) tend to pay a little more attention to their posts for a while but thats about it. I treat "Reported" links differently. Some things I may pass over normally will get tossed if someone else doesnt like it. Keep in mind that I try to keep my own opinions out of Modding, so I usually er on the side of caution.

But basically what I'm saying here is: Ya, what ygf said.

I'm not going to repeat what l@d and ygf said verbatim, since it's basically what I would have said anyways. Report posts and they'll get dealt with. I'm here at least 8 hours a day, so don't ........ and moan about me not spending enough time here. While I'm here, this isn't all I'm doing, so sometimes I miss threads - that's what the report button's for. There's over 3000 posts in the deleted post board right now, and that just ones we've moved there - not ones that were deleted outright.

If you've got some specific problem with me, say it - don't ***** about all the mods because you're upset I closed a month-old thread you bumped.

I think people who complain about moderators should just calm down, take a deep breath, and relax. Trolls love to get reactions from people - the only way to defeat them is to ignore them. Once you do that, they either wise up and post intelligently, or they go away and are never heard from again. As for "n00bies" who just shout and cry for help without producing any of their own work, we the mods have no control over this. Sure they could just delete such posts and be super strict about it, but most probably don't have the time or energy to be so vigilant.

Much of what I'm about to say is repeating what has been said. But oh well I feel like ranting...

There is a very simple reason we don't delete these threads. We don't have to. What is someone who is logging onto the site for the first time asking a homework question going to think if their thread just disappears? Most likely they're going to be confused and post it again, or ask what happened to it. Or they will leave the site completely. None of those things help the site. Instead people, old hats to the boards, tell the person that no one will do their homework for them and to ask a more specific question.

Now given, if the new user were to read the announcement, FAQ etc, they would not make such posts. But it has been long since established that the highest classified documents in the world should be labled FAQ.

The moderators need to do their job more.
I can assure you the moderators do plenty. Most of them you'll notice are carry over's from the old boards, and would not have been remade moderators if they didn't do their job.

As lightatdawn said the guiding princible of the cp.com mods is "have a light touch. " All of the mods believe in free speech, and while many flames are deleted, if they express an intelligent opinion they are not. Granted there are sometimes not deleted when they should be, however as it was pointed out all of the moderators are mods volentarily. None of us are paid. We all have our own lives, work, schools, etc, and once a post has been directly responded to, as they often before seen by a mod (they're a lot more of you than there are of us) it is harder to delete it.

Now, there is something you can do obviouslt...If there is a post that you think should be edited or deleted, please click the Warn moderators about post at the bottom of every post. I can assure you that all reported posts are looked at by at least one, usually four or five moderators within hours of their being reported. This is something that people rarely do, but it is VERY helpful to the mods who cannot read EVERY post mad on the boards.
    Kermi3

If you're new to the boards, welcome and reading this will help you get started.

    That is the case.
I too know who he is, and I must say. I'm 100% behind Troll-king.
His posts really made me laugh (and what is wrong with a good laugh)

There is a real nice saying in English:
If you can't stand the heat, then get out of the citchen.
If you can't take some flaming(sp?), what will you do in real life? there aren't mods in real life you know

    >>if you don't want to spend alot of time on this board THEN DONT BE A FRICKING MOD. IT'S THAT SIMPLE.

    >>there are mods in real life. they're called police.
I'm not talking about that. When someone says I'm a mental retard who deserves a walloping. I'm not going to cry to the police for that. You will get flamed in real life also, and if you can't defend yourself, you can have a hard time. And the police ain't going to do **** about that.
