My girlfriend is a programmer!
It's unfulfilled dreams that keep you alive.

In my class section at school we have exactly three girls out of around 150 people. One is just lost, one is pretty decent but asks the most annoying and pointless questions you have ever heard and the third one can code circles around just about everyone else.
All the girls I know that are good are really good. Just like others have said, they have the analytical tools for it.

That seems pretty much like the guys...
In my last programming class, there were 3 girls and only 2 guys... We had the 3 girls you listed there, too - one that was a genius (but still asked retarded questions), one that was decent (but asked pretty dumb questions), and one that was totally lost and retaking the class (and will be again next term)

I forgot to mention the one that is really good is also SMOKIN hot and has had a different cleavage bearing tank top for every day of this semester and apparently doesn't believe in bras. God Bless that girl.
Damn... A stiff wind would blow the smart girl in my class away... Plus, she always wore this ruby-red lipstick that I swear must have glowed in the dark...
The worst part was her voice, though :shudder:

let's hope that 1 to 1 ratio i saw at orientation holds through my four years... yeah it probably won't... but we shall see... and taking 4 math/sci/comp/ece classes per any semester is absolutely insane... looking forward to that...

1. Why are there so many more famous male programmers than female programmers:
I think you're all forgetting that the world hasn't quite turned a full evolution when it comes to women in the work place. If I'm not mistaken, women weren't considered "college material" until the 80's. Reason 1, why most famous programmers are males- programming is something that needs to be taught.
I have a friend that's female, and she was programming in pascal and fortran before c was even invented. But did she go to college... no! Because back then women weren't supposed to go to college. She did flow charts in high school, but quit after that, and is now a business consultant, and hasn't programmed in many years.
As far as why there's still so many more male programmers today. Well whoever said it's because of interest/lack of interest is the main reason (is probably right). I don't see why computers would interests males more than females, but who knows??? I'm sure there's reasons behind this, but lets face it, no one (probably) really knows why!
