Coded Music

I've heard heaps of coded music before and I'd just like to know if anybody has info on how to do this...

pick up the book "Programming Windows" by Charles Petzold and he has an entire section devoted to wav, midi, and anything that has to do with playing, recording, or creating music with a pc.
