    There are some online-services, but I thought they are not free. Maybe some of them are free, but I don't know about that.

    For converting I use Ghostscript/Ghostview. I choose PS-printer in, for example, Word. Then print to PS, with Ghostview I read this PS-document and then let it convert to PDF. As far as I know, this all is free software.
