because they have moving parts which are inefficient, make noise, pollute, and smell like burning oil.

Gears and engines are usually associated with real tough men who wear leather clothes, smoke a cigarette, are badly shaved. Chips and microprocessors are usually associated with computer nerds.

It is simply because although both jobs need skills to do, one is WAY more physically demanding than the other.

So....macho because you end up full of oil, and LOOK like you have done a hard days graft.

chips need delicacy to manufacture, to handle, and to learn about. gears and engines are designed to take a beating and then some. the closest thing to horsepower in a computer is its fans.

of course, engines are designed by computers.........

And surely ( i think) you can say that a 2.2ghz P4 has lots of horsepower!, in terms of computers....

    >>So....macho because you end up full of oil

Dont know about you, but I try to keep my mouth closed when I'm under the car in an effort to prevent that. It gets all over me though. Cant get it out from under your nails for almost a week.

Macho is what people call themselves when they have no brain and need to sound elevated above the rest. Using 'chip-type thingies' involves sitting on your arse and contemplating how your OS could be so evil as to crash your app for the millionth time that hour. Using gear type thingies involves bending wrenches and ripping your knuckles off on the starter trying to get some stupid nut off something that you couldnt get to with a snake let alone a socket wrench. See? I suppose they both have something in common though; Both can be highly frustrating at times yet highly rewarding in the end.
