    Notebooks

I'm looking at picking up a second computer, a notebook, to do dev on and finally have a PC I can move easily...

I looked at Dell's site - they had a decent deal, but I'd rather ask people who actually own them rather than checking some ad...

Speed's not a huge priority for me - anything 1Ghz+ would suit me fine. Price is a bigger deal... I don't want to have to spend a lot of money... Any help?

I have an HP that was fairly cheap, P3 with an insanely bad video card, a decent amount of RAM and I think maybe 10gig hd. Dell's always run a bit high price-wise...

I wish I had one of those really sleek-looking Compaqs or Dells...or maybe one of those Compaqs that look like they could survive a nuclear blast? those are cool...

I have a compaq presario notebook. My only problem with it is that it came with WinXP Home edition.

Even though I'm sure you're just looking for an excuse to dig MS, it is disappointing that I can't choose to have it come with no OS installed...

I wouldn't mind having it come with hardware that is tested on the newest version of Red Hat Linux. I am not seeing any reason to return to MS Windows.

Actuall RH 7.3 can be installed on a notebook, nice thing is that you can install it as a server, workstation, notebook, and I forget what else, they are just different packages. I haven't tried to install it because my notebook is too new, although it might install with no problems. Hmmm...

Just fdisk it. If you get XP Pro I'll swap you my redhat disks.
Dell has a good reputation, but if price is the main thing, look into used/refurbished systems. Or maybe Consumers will get rid of some old ones.
I bought one machine at a school auction for $300, monitors went for $1. The hospital in town gives away their old machines. Throw in some ram & a bigger hard drive, and you're set. Maybe not 1 gig cpu, but most stuff doesn't need that.

    Cool.

Well - my car just cost $900 (all new rotors, calipers, and pads... and throw in an oil change, too)to fix, so I don't know how realistic that notebook is now

the only brand I've used so far as far as laptops are concerned is IBM. My ThinkPad is decent. only errors I've gotten so far are errors from my Windows OS itself (too many blue screens). probably from too many security software constantly running. The bad thing is it's hard to find those laptops with Mobile Pentium IIs again. I know I sound pathetic but their power lasted much longer than my new P4 laptop (only option I can find under ibm.com). I wanted a custom built from them but it might cost me more so I chose from what they've got on the site. It feels like I need to stay close to an outlet all the time (well, not exactly). Too bad I gave my old laptop to my cousin. I have MSDEV6 on it and it's fine. The only thing good about it is faster compile time (especially when you have huge projects to work on). Just one thing, if you're the type of person who enjoys listening to music all the time with high volume, it's amazing how the power status changes after a while. I recommend a portable music player instead.
I also highly recommend extra Lithium batteries with your laptop.

I have a compaq and an IBM at work... I prefer the compaq... but I hate compaq's and would never own one personally. Hypocritical.... I know... but hey, my work life isn't the same as my personal life.

Too bad about the car. I would have done it for you for $150 plus price of parts.

I decided to go with Dell. Today it just came in the mail. It is the Inspiron 2600. It is not bad and comes with some nice features.

The notebook computer is better than I originally thought it would be, however it is fairly delicate and not too easily to transport. You can obviously transport it however you still have to take plenty of precaution with it. Maybe get a palm OS.
