Basically go around and ask them what they like and what they don't like abou the existing system, build a list of requirements. Than discover ways to meet user needs more effectively.

That's probably the way I'll approach it if that's what I end up doing. More than likely, I'll meet with my boss and his boss and they'll say "We think you should do this totally worthless project, so we don't have to and so we can shut up some upper management guy."

Yeah that's the key, just improve what is there, don't reinvent the wheel because you do not have enough time. And make sure to talk to a lot of the users. Find what their needs are.

A slightly more difficult thing about be to take some of their existing code and rewrite it in OOP so that it is more manageable and will allow the user to add and remove functonality (components) to the application.

I'm guessing that most code for a large company is procedural based. Before doing this however read the book Object Oriented Design Heuristics by Arthur J. Riel. It's just a book of OOP design rules, not a long book either and it is easy to read. A project like that would be fairly difficult because some of their programs are probably thousands of lines of code in length but it would be very rewarding to your company and it would certainly test your programming knowledge.

And don't forget to redocument the source in detail. Cripes, I'm even getting excited about this!

Hehe - well, you wanna do it for me?

    > And don't forget to redocument the source in detail.

I think that's gonna be a large part of the written part of the thesis...

Now that I think about it, I might not even be writing a program. For all I know, it could be something totally different... And actually, that might not be a bad thing - I might not feel so burned out that I can't program when I get home.

I would be interested in helping if it involved something like taking a procedural program and refactoring it into an OOP program. So you are graduating soon? I still have a little over a year left. I also have a final project but I don't have to think too much about it yet.

I was just kidding - I don't think I'm supposed to get outside help on it... Hopefully, I'm done a year from Dec.

Hehe - maybe I can post on here like some people...

"My thesis is due tomorrow and I don't have anything done! Please write me a program to calculate load on the substation network and write me a 100 page paper on it!"

If you open this thread, I will try to reach Sunlight, to get one of his classic "Read the FAQ" replies

She was so Blonde, she spent 20 minutes looking at the orange juice can because it said "Concentrate."

When in doubt, read the FAQ.
    Then ask a smart question.

How about a program to accurately account for energy trade/swaps on the balance sheet? Believe Consumers has a problem there...
They've also done some environmentally friendly things, removing dams, donating streamside land, etc. Maybe something to do with that.

    I don't know what you're talking about

In truth, we didn't do what we said - I believe all our wash trades were accounted for on the sheets.... We didn't lie about how much money we had (which is illegal), we lied about how big we were (which is legal, but still lying, and investors aren't real keen on that).
