OS X is based on FreeBSD, FreeBSD being a modified version of berkley(I have a feeling I speeld that wrong) Unix. Technicly OS X is just a shell on top of a modified version of FreeBSD.

Now on if you should get one or not. Personally I would say no, but that is proably based on my anti-apple bias. I think its one of those situations where you either like apples or you hate them, personally I hate them, they are ugly (I dont want my computer to look like a **** desk lamp), they dont run alot of what I want to run, your stuck with apple-made hardware, and apple doesnt really listen to what their users say, so when they screw up your stuck with their screw up.

An example of this is the round mouse that shipped with the original Imac. It was a gigantic failure, there was no way to tell which direction the mouse was oriented by feel, so you would move it one direction and it would go in another. Despite numerous complaints about this they never did anything about it and never even admitted that it was a design flaw.

The only real good things that come with OS X are the things that it gets from being based on FreeBSD, and a better way to get these features is to get a PC and put FreeBSD,Unix,Linux, etc.. on it.

    --------------------------------------------------------------
Back in the day Windows user criticized Apple users because the Mac OS was a pure GUI with no command line interface behind it. Now Windows is a pure GUI, and OS X has a command line interface behind it. Guess what Windows users say now...

I'm not a mac guy at all, but they seem like they're good if you deal with a lot of graphics. And i haven't really read anything on it much but i've heard that osX is based on the unix kernel. but i could be wrong there. It's mostly just a matter of preference. In my opinion Mac = Graphics Windows = Ease
    Linux = Stability/ Fun ( :

-something I found on the web (has the option to emulate Mac OS?):

    http://www.yaromat.com/

I've tried it, saw it, and restarted my computer.
something I don't quite recommend. try at your own risk.

I don't know where this myth sprouted up, but I'm pretty sure it's completely false. If you want to do any kind of 3d modeling, PC's are light years ahead of Mac's. Most major 3d modeling programs don't even run on Macs. And as far as 2d graphics go, there is no difference. Both machines can run them fine. there is no difference. As far as 3d animation goes, I don't think that 3d studio max (the most popular 3d animaiton software) runs on macs, but I could be wrong. I think the reason that realisti animated movies are made on macs is because the animators are art people and artsy fartsy people are usually the ones that use macs (and cats too, damn fruitcakes).

I have two uncles who do 2d/3d modeling and a little 3d animation, they both use PC's and absolutely hate macs. Other people they know in the business also feel the same way about macs.

I use a mac at work, and I HATE IT. No right-click buttion just drives me insane!!!!

    Macs suck.

I just saw a commercial last night with this woman standing in a room. She said something like "I could never understand the moving around and opening stuff up. Then I got a mac. It's just so much easier to understand.. it really feels intuitive, and I can do things I could never do with a PC."

Why? Because she's an idiot. And besides, you have to "move around and open stuff up" in windows, too.

I havn't used Mac OS X, but I'm pretty sure it is basically the same GUI as the older OS'es, correct? (just different system base). If I'm correct, what a piece of tripe. I HATE that GUI interface, it just stinks. Making it *nix based is great, but other than that.. poo!

That's not the Mac's fault, that's your mouse's fault. Mac's support 2 button mouses (mice?) since OS9.1. You can get yourself a new mouse with 2 button and scroll wheel and the Mac will use it (given that you're running OS9.1 or higher.

As part of my job I have to visit various arts based organisations from time to time.....The vast majority of them use Macs for graphical design and animation, but as to to question of are Macs better for this stuff, I dont know...my personal feeling is that I doubt it......

I also get to see the bills for these "hip & trendy" looking devices and sometimes its enough to make me fall out of my chair!!!

I dont doubt that they are very good machines, but I think the way Apple control them has been their downfall.......IBM did better.....they announced to the world how their machines work and this is why the PC rules the world.

One of my best friends runs MAC OSX and its exellent!. The original OSX was a buggy piece of crap, but since MAC OS 10.1, its the best OS i've ever seen. I'd get one myself, but its hard to find stuff that runs on it. Windows is dominating, so I need to go with that or i'm screwed. As for GUI, I was going to tell you about how Xerox originally made it, then the company sold it off the Apple becuase they thought it was going to be a huge flop, but they were wrong beyond belief. Windows then befriended Steve Jobs and made him think that Gates was his ally, but in actual fact, he just stole his OS and changed it a bit. Jobs though IBM was the enemy, but Gates was the real enemy. I got all this from the movie Pirates of Silicon Valey. Best movie ever.

Hehe, I've had OSX skins on XP for about 3 months now

I personally haven't used a Mac since highschool (even though I repair Mac's and am Apple certified, yikes!) but I have hear a lot of good, and even more bad, things about them. I'll stick to XP for now thank you
