Build your own or else buy a Dell.
Can you get dell at a store or online only???
Go to a small, decent computer shop and buy a built one. Find out everything that is in it, and ask them what is upgradable.
Or better yet... build your own.
My parents.. for some reason.. dont want to build one..
We have just bought a graphics card.. 640MB of ram... but NO no build your own...
Is it that difficult to put in a motherboard?

that's all i have to say.
Dude, that is crazy. I just created a $21,000.00 system. Wow, I could not imagine having a computer that expensive. It definately would be pimp to have a comp like that.
Upgrade. It's much cheaper.
have it built.....it's how I'll get my new comp...I'm sick and tired of these stupid brand names. I paid almost 3,000 for my comp about 2 3/4 years ago because I didn't have it built by someone...about 6 monts later, I saw ppl with custom built computers that were twice as good as mine but with half the price  this is NOT justice....
and for the upgrading part, it's only a good idea if ur comp is still workable unlike mine
My motherboard I have now cost a whole 100 dollars... bah
MSI Mainboard.
Oh well.. I guess ill figure out something
Hey, I have a MSI board (and I like it just fine).
I shop here:
www.nanosys1.com
Once you've got a complete system it's only a few hundred bucks to upgrade. However, I've found it's not much more expensive to buy a complete system compared to building it yourself. It's not the hardware that's expensive, it's the software and peripherals.
Wow really?
Maybe I should get a sound card and XP upgrade and ill be set :)
I built my own system.. and I've been keeping it up to date ever since. That way, I never have to dish out huge amounts of cash for massive upgrades -- buy the parts when they're cheap.
As for if it's difficult to install your own motherboard... no, it is not. Although, I wouldn't recommend you going and doing it without first watching someone who knows what they're doing.
MSI... Careful, they have THE WORST technical support... although I do have an MSI board. If you live in Canada, I suggest www.robotnik.com for your parts... they're the cheapest place I've found in Canadian currency (after shipping and such) plus, they're in the same city as I :)
Echo Dual-Catfish.
Tell your folks that building it from pieces will help your understanding of PC's.
Look at places like 'Tom's Hardware guide' for the exact items to buy.
I spent Au$140 on a Rhino MB, my friend spent Au$175 on an ASUS MB. His was three times faster than mine (according to SANDRA's benchmarks).
Watch for bottlenecks. No point in having a Athlon 1900 and RAID if you have a TNT2 16Mb graphic card.
I'm a hw tech, so i'd say to build one. But the way the parts are going up for some components (cough cough video cards) and the prices of pre built units are going down. I'd say to get a dell all the way. Just don't get one of those damn 2 inch wide ones. The bigger the better (:
