radical education reform

Here's my two cents on education reform:

there should be mandatory grades K-6 that move fast and cover the bases of a lot of areas. After K-6 the student gets a booklet that details the different areas of work that are availible and/or best suited to him/her. Using the booklet, the student would go out and buy the resources that he/she will need to learn, and learn at his/her own pace. Once the said student completes his/her education in whatever field, he/she reports to a government funded test that tests the students skills in the area that he/she has studied in. Now, there would of course be teachers that you could hire to help you learn x or y, and there would also be places where you could go and work on your skills (a machinery shop, a forge, etc.).

what would you do to reform education in your country?

The problem with this is tha the most important things learned in K-6 today are things that can never be learned the same way again. Emotional growth, societal morals, manners etc. Things that must be learned in early childhood. Dumping lots of information on kids doesn't work. Besides do you think kids would sit still for this?

Did you always do your homework? I didn't. Besides, people don't learn best form books, they learn better from other people. And better still from doing, usually under the supervision or guidance of others.

Plus you're eliminating high school which is very important to learning how to interact with people in the workplace, dating, and life.

Where's the money coming from?

I think the best way to refor the school systems are, to a certain extent, the obvious ones. (Though also expensive) Smaller class sizes. It is also nessicary to recognize that all students learn diffrently. The brighest student in a class may get the worst grades because he learn's diffrently or expresses himself diffrently. (Example: Einstien) I think there should be more learning specialists in every school to help students deturmine how they learn best.

actually, i do honestly think part of sex education ought to be more about how to please the opposite sex !!

anyway seriously, i think that a lot of kids would be better off learning something more suited to their needs, ie in my school they tried to teach latin to everybody even the most dense...no wonder they are bored stiff (so was i)
better to teach something more useful, ie young men LOVE cars , machinery, computers stuff like that.....get them interested and motivated......

I think that after like 6 grade kids that are planning to say computer programming would study a lot of math and skip all that advanced science stuff, and so on. Likewise if a person is planning to be a journalist they could skip all that advanced science and math stuff. That's what I think because some of the stuff we learn it's just to waste our time. History I think everyone should learn regarless. As well as basics of each of the areas of study in high school.

The problem is, how many people really know what they want to be after 6th grade? I know I didn't. I went through 4 or 5 possible careers, at least 2 or 3 of which i knew i wanted to be before I settled on something. It took high school extra-curriculars to figure it out. Moreover I don't think it should be all about getting to your job. Teenage years are supposed to be the best years of your life. They should be, that's important.

School reform isn't that hard when you remove the politcal correctness, and look at it from the perspective off who is there, no who was there fiveteen to twenty years.

1. Teacher Sallery- This has gone up as stundent achivment has gone down. It's quite simmple when the teachers primary concerin is his or her pay check and not teaching they are unable to do as well.

2. Amount of work- This is manly addressed at Math Homework. Often times the teacher would assign homework that might take an hour plus to do. The next day the people who get it and end up scoring well on test have pretty much all of the problems right. The people however who end up doing bad on the test have most of the problems wrong, and it is offten because of the same mistake over and over again. So all that homework did was renforce a bad habbit.

I'm not sure I totally agree with this one. One problem is that since teacher pay is so low (overall) many of the best teachers simply don't become teachers or teach college or at only a few extremely good private schools. I absolutly agree though that we have too many people that are teaching temporarily, because it'll be easy, or a tie over, or "something until i get married."

I absolutly agree with this...but there are exceptions. First of all some (not a lot) but some homework is nessicary for the amount of material we require schools to cover these days. Second, out of the classroom practice is important to renforece. However it can be very useful.

There was a teacher at my school. Older woman who'd been there forever. She rarely smiled to people she didn't know. Was chair of the math department, and generally looked scary....But when you met her she was the nicest (and shyest) person you'd ever meet. But she was demanding. She gave a "fair" amount of homework, checked it everyday, and is one of the best calculus teachers in the nation. She gets her students to want to please her. To the point that I once saw one of her AP Calculus students crying because she thought she made a 4 on the AP and would disappoint her teacher. Anyway I digress...I think with good effective teachers that understand the learning process homework can be very effective, if done properly.

You misunderstood me, who does a better job? Someone with high sallery who does there job for the monney. Or someone with a lower sallery that loves there job.

I agree with what you say, homework is important but when people spend over an hour doing it wrong does not help anyone.

thanks kermi, mine are just about over... well, at least i can say that i wouldn't have done anything differently, but still... i wanna stay...

yeah, apparently even after you're done with 2 years undergrad GE, you still have the choice over your first future. so... if you think all that stuff is a waste, just wait until you've had calculus III, and you'll wish you'd never done CS... okay? heh heh...

i like the variety, and i can't understand how i'd go through math all day... i was like you once, i thought it would be great just to do that all day long, skip english, history, blah blah blah... straight to my algebra two class all day... but, then i had a teacher which made me realize how important english, and more importantly, moderation, is... and about now i'm baffled at the fact that they want me to choose my next four years at the dotted line... when it comes the time, you'll realize you really have to think, because a lot of times there's no turning back... at that age, at that time in your life, enjoy, it'll never happen again...
