And even then, in the ancient times when we were using stone boards instead of this modern webserver stuff, the moderators were elected ;-)

She was so Blonde, she spent 20 minutes looking at the orange juice can because it said "Concentrate."

Were they really? My memory's not that long lived. Wow, I don't remember those elections at all. Though I don't think some of the mods from when we used blood on cave walls to write were elected...like the first ones...ah well it doesn't matter...now we elect.

On the old board, the need for moderators was established. When floated on the GD board, a whole load of threads about who should and should not be moderators were started, varying from the reasoned debate to the raging lunatic. These became rationalised and rationalised until, although they wern't technically elected, the same names appeared over and over again. These people woke up one morning to find they had moderator attributes. That is my recollection, however, it was a while ago.

Some people might think adrianxw is joking about this part. Nope. I'd been away from the board for almost a week. I wake up one morning with some spare time ahead of me...

I sit down at the computer with my cereal bowl. Still kinda half asleep.
