I think that Win2k and WinXP Professional is too expensive and OEM's won't sell systems with WinXP Pro but rather WinXP Home version unless you special order or something. Maybe Linux isn't so bad after all. hmmm.

Oh Jesus, here we go again....
Do you change preferred OS's with the seasons?
AAAAA!!! anyone else notice dean may be reverting back into a linux zealot!!?? WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE WORLD TODAY???
Maybe sunlight (who was controlling him) died in the terrorist attacks, and now Dean is slowly being reformatted (he's a robot, remember?) and piece-by-piece being restored??
Let's keep the guesses comin! Just the opposite of the last thread where we made up reasons for him turning pro-MS.
> I think that Win2k and WinXP Professional is too expensive
What, at academic prices? £45.00 for Windows 2000 is comparable to buying a Linux distribution, and you get ME thrown in too. When XP comes out, there will undoubtedly be a similar deal. That doesn't sound expensive to me.
They are both around $275 USD. I don't know what pounds are. I don't deal in fake money.
275? What are you smoking? I haven't seen it that high anywhere, esp. academic price...
no what are you guys smoking?
Linux is free! and it rocks any windoze products!
and no im not talking about warez sites... check ftp.tucows.com they have every version of linux available in iso format
Linux is only free if you don't value your own time. j/k
I don't like Linux and I don't like Windows, infact I don't like any of them. I'm thinking of using an OS and not hooking it up to the internet. I think that's the best answer.
I'm not a child, I have to pay the adult prices. I just seen the price for WinXP Pro, okay it's more like $250 USD. Not a penny cheaper. I doubt WinXP will work with hardware and you can't re-install it more than twice or something like that. I'm starting to really wish that the terrorists would strike Microsoft next.
I should have picked some other occupation!
What occupation is that where your OS doesn't matter and you don't need to be connected to the internet?Quote:

Methinks your true profession might be that of troll.
The internet is a mistake because nobody can police it. It is mostly a waste of time too. I'm glad that the .coms failed.
I knew it! Your occupation is as a troll!
That's good because I was really starting to worry about your mental state.
I hope you are having a good time. Nothing like a little humor to keep the day rolling along.
> I don't know what pounds are. I don't deal in fake money.
Dearie me... I laughed, anyway.
> I'm not a child, I have to pay the adult prices.
Well, you're enough of a child not to be aware of world currencies, evidently. £45 translates to about $70, or about 100 Canadian dollars. I'd be highly surprised if you don't have a similar academic programme over there.
Of course, if you're no longer a student at all, there are some OEM copies here at £115 (about $170) - but that's not exactly expensive if you're working using it. Buy more than four and you get a volume discount. Almost no-one pays the full retail price.
try BeOS supposed to be the sweetes OS ever...
or Minuet fits on a floppy complete with GUI, sound, network, 10 apps ,ect ect...
or try OpenBSD no security worries but its mostly for servers...
>>dont deal in fake money?
this does not deserve a reply
I think you should get a choice of installed os when you buy
Whicho/s do you want installed
Win95/98/Me/2000/NT/XP
Linux/Unix/BSD
BEos
virtually every machine sold (except servers) come with preinstalled Windows!
Hmm...
I remember reading that one major PC giant stopped shipping Linux with its boxes due to lack of demand.
I mean... If you want Linux, your probably not the type to get an "off the shelf" setup.
that is true but it would be nice to get an option. If we want NT or Beos we can have it instead of "your buying a new pc , you get windows - tough ****" type of attitude
We finally have a choice of chip manafacturers instead of intel or intel - we can choose, why not choose the o/s
nobody writes software for other Os'es theyve all jumped on the MS bandwagon like a bunch of lemmings...
I'll be ordering this week:
Office XP Professional & FrontPage 2002 Bundle, 4 CD Set $35
Windows 2000 Pro Upgrade, CD Set $25
from my school. We have a deal with Microsoft
We also get the Visual Studio 6.0 Pro for $25
So that's what I roll with.
I do however dream of being a full Linux supporter eventually. I favor Red Hat 7.1 at the moment but the fact of the matter is that the majority of your everyday people use M$. I love Linux but I doubt I'll be giving up on M$ anytime soon.
those are some damn sweet deals...
>> those are some sweet deals.
No doubt, We should now buy software through taylorguitarman
good idea thats a savings of around $200+ a piece...
Sorry guys, but I can only buy one.
They keep track of what you buy.
www.wisc.edu/wisc
In case any of you go to one of the schools.
that stinks... oh well.
The main thing I dislike about MS is the stupid Office assitant. He pops up ever 10 seconds on my friends comp and my friend doesnt want to turn him off.
250 dollars for an OS! jeez I can build a 600 duron with a geforce 1 + 128 mb ram for cheaper, and use Win 98.
I am guessing the new XP Bussiness server will retail for 10,000 if this crap keeps up.
What's even more maddening is all the terrorist attacks on these operating systems. Microsoft is sticking its neck out on the chopping block.
>Linux is free! and it rocks any windoze products!
Linux's place is for web servers. Here it has numerers advantages over windows 2000. Windows 2000 is for PC's it can do a few things linux can't. It's main thing is ease of use. [jumps in to fire suit]
>try BeOS supposed to be the sweetes OS ever...
Been there tried that, don't work. I unistated it (i think) but I still have the exe file to reinstall it. Is there anything I did wrong. such as were it is on my hard drive.
>I doubt WinXP will work with hardware and you can't re-install it more than twice or something like that. <
It also will delete it self if you don't register and pay 50 dollers per computer it is instled in. My school may not bother to upgrade because of the high cost. The way I under stand the lisence that is used by pre win xp system is they could install it on 1 hundred computers for the price of one cd.
Also I think microsoft will loose it's monoploy because of it's polices aganst piratism. Since there is only 4 coppies of windows in new york that did come with a computer. (except for the ones on store shelfs)
>>Since there is only 4 coppies of windows in new york that did come with a computer. (except for the ones on store shelfs)<<
Ok, try saying this again. Only this time MAKE SENSE. I doubt that there're only 4 computers in NY that run windows!
Hm. Seems people need to obtain a little more information about XP's licensing.
> 250 dollars for an OS!
It will not cost $250.
>I doubt WinXP will work with hardware and you can't re-install it more than twice or something like that.
XP will function with all the hardware in your system.
When XP first runs, it attempts to connect to a Microsoft server to register itself. It sends a product code (which does not contain any information about you) to that server. The server sends a response saying 'yes, this is okay'. If you are not connected at that point, it will give you a grace period of 30 days in which to do so. Once you have done so, you can use XP continually without re-activation, unless you significantly change the hardware in your computer.
It will allow you to reinstall it as many times as you like on that computer. Each time, you will have to activate. This is not a problem.
If you try to install it on a different computer, or you change more than about four (!) pieces of hardware in your computer, the server may not allow you to re-activate it. At this point, you call a free Microsoft helpline, explain your legal reason for it not reactivating, and it is reset so that you are able to reactivate it.
Now, this doesn't prevent you from doing anything legal with your copy of the software. If you install the same copy on a dozen computers, you will have a problem - but that's illegal.
Finally, copies as part of volume licensing will not require activation.
> It also will delete it self if you don't register and pay 50 dollers per computer it is instled in.
It won't 'delete itself'. It will simply cease to function. The $50 cost is, I suspect, a figment of someone's imagination.
XP = eXPensive?
Anyway, has XP doesn't seem to be getting anyone excited about buying a new PC.
>At this point, you call a free Microsoft helpline, explain your legal reason for it not reactivating, and it is reset so that you are able to reactivate it. <
i can just imagine.
Help: Hello MS help line how may we be of service for you today sir.
You: i updated my computer and not XP no workie
Help: well just folow these easy steps,
Send us all your reciepts for the hardware, a copy of your drivers license, your SS number, your adress and phone number, a reciept for XP, your credit card number, your MS passport, and your soul, plus a $55 money order made out to Bill Gates, sealed in a buisness sized manila envelope. thank you ::click::.
I've confirmed the price. It's approx $250 USD for WinXP Professional full version. Not a penny cheaper. Infact it is actually closer to $275 USD.
32 or 64 bit?
32 bit
How much for 64
$550 USD
I just got WinXP Pro....it is awesome...definitely worth the money if you prefer to get it that way....
XP is awesome...read my Its Amazing thread.
Actually I was just kidding about that 64-bit price there, lol.
This is what they had listed. It was in Canadian dollars but I'm telling you the approx US price:
Win XP Professional Full Version $275 USD
Win XP Pro Upgrade $170 USD
Win XP Home Version $170 USD
I forgot the price of the home version upgrade but it was there too. It didn't say anthing about 64-bit. Those are going to come pre-installed.
> Win XP Professional Full Version $275 USD
> Win XP Pro Upgrade $170 USD
And perhaps you'd like to tell me how many people you know will pay the 'Full Version' price?
* Students get it at academic prices: ~$70.
* Volume users get it at large discounts.
* OEMs get it at large discounts.
* MSDN members get it sent to them.
* The rest of the world already owns a version of Windows, and buys the upgrade - or gets it with their new computer.
Anyone without a legal existing copy of Windows should be able to get one for under $100, easily, thus qualifying for the upgrade price and still coming back in profit. Of course, if the Home version suits your needs, it's even cheaper.
> Win XP Home Version $170 USD
Which puts the upgrade at about $70, making it a 'must-have', in my opinion.
