    Hmm...

I remember reading that one major PC giant stopped shipping Linux with its boxes due to lack of demand.

I mean... If you want Linux, your probably not the type to get an "off the shelf" setup.

that is true but it would be nice to get an option. If we want NT or Beos we can have it instead of "your buying a new pc , you get windows - tough ****" type of attitude

We finally have a choice of chip manafacturers instead of intel or intel - we can choose, why not choose the o/s

    I'll be ordering this week:
Office XP Professional & FrontPage 2002 Bundle, 4 CD Set $35
Windows 2000 Pro Upgrade, CD Set $25
from my school. We have a deal with Microsoft
We also get the Visual Studio 6.0 Pro for $25
So that's what I roll with.

I do however dream of being a full Linux supporter eventually. I favor Red Hat 7.1 at the moment but the fact of the matter is that the majority of your everyday people use M$. I love Linux but I doubt I'll be giving up on M$ anytime soon.

The main thing I dislike about MS is the stupid Office assitant. He pops up ever 10 seconds on my friends comp and my friend doesnt want to turn him off.

250 dollars for an OS! jeez I can build a 600 duron with a geforce 1 + 128 mb ram for cheaper, and use Win 98.

I am guessing the new XP Bussiness server will retail for 10,000 if this crap keeps up.

What's even more maddening is all the terrorist attacks on these operating systems. Microsoft is sticking its neck out on the chopping block.
    I compile code with:
    Visual Studio.NET beta2

    >Linux is free! and it rocks any windoze products!

Linux's place is for web servers. Here it has numerers advantages over windows 2000. Windows 2000 is for PC's it can do a few things linux can't. It's main thing is ease of use. [jumps in to fire suit]

    >try BeOS supposed to be the sweetes OS ever...
Been there tried that, don't work. I unistated it (i think) but I still have the exe file to reinstall it. Is there anything I did wrong. such as were it is on my hard drive.

    >I doubt WinXP will work with hardware and you can't re-install it more than twice or something like that. <

It also will delete it self if you don't register and pay 50 dollers per computer it is instled in. My school may not bother to upgrade because of the high cost. The way I under stand the lisence that is used by pre win xp system is they could install it on 1 hundred computers for the price of one cd.

Also I think microsoft will loose it's monoploy because of it's polices aganst piratism. Since there is only 4 coppies of windows in new york that did come with a computer. (except for the ones on store shelfs)

Ok, try saying this again. Only this time MAKE SENSE. I doubt that there're only 4 computers in NY that run windows!

Hm. Seems people need to obtain a little more information about XP's licensing.

    > 250 dollars for an OS!

    It will not cost $250.

    >I doubt WinXP will work with hardware and you can't re-install it more than twice or something like that.

XP will function with all the hardware in your system.

When XP first runs, it attempts to connect to a Microsoft server to register itself. It sends a product code (which does not contain any information about you) to that server. The server sends a response saying 'yes, this is okay'. If you are not connected at that point, it will give you a grace period of 30 days in which to do so. Once you have done so, you can use XP continually without re-activation, unless you significantly change the hardware in your computer.

It will allow you to reinstall it as many times as you like on that computer. Each time, you will have to activate. This is not a problem.

If you try to install it on a different computer, or you change more than about four (!) pieces of hardware in your computer, the server may not allow you to re-activate it. At this point, you call a free Microsoft helpline, explain your legal reason for it not reactivating, and it is reset so that you are able to reactivate it.

Now, this doesn't prevent you from doing anything legal with your copy of the software. If you install the same copy on a dozen computers, you will have a problem - but that's illegal.

Finally, copies as part of volume licensing will not require activation.

    > It also will delete it self if you don't register and pay 50 dollers per computer it is instled in.

It won't 'delete itself'. It will simply cease to function. The $50 cost is, I suspect, a figment of someone's imagination.

    XP = eXPensive?

Anyway, has XP doesn't seem to be getting anyone excited about buying a new PC.
