    Cool Idea

I know speech recognition software is pretty ****e, but wouldn't it be great if you could just speak your code into your compiler? Or better yet, a brainscanner which takes the code from your mind and directly outputs it to the screen?

    Maybe one day...

speechcoder is the idea i suggested when we were asked about our dream compiler.

But can you imagine speaking to a compiler
    saying every word and symbol!

"Er that weird symbol that the American's call pound but we call hash (#) here. What's next? include. Less than symbol, stdio dot h, greater than symbol. Ah nuts to this!"

Yeah I see your point iain!

    Books would start as:

    Position the microphone correctly.

    say "pound-include-space-less than-s-t-d-i-o-dot-h-greater than-enter-enter-int-space-main-begin paren-end paren-enter-begin chicken lip-enter-tab-p-r-i-n-t-f-begin paren-quotation-cap-hello-space-world-quotation-end paren-semicolon-enter-tab-return-space-zero-semicolon-enter-end chicken lip"

Then, all you need to do is compile!

What if you stutter or have a lisp?

occasionaly i use Dragon Dictate Naturally Speaking to program. i've just retrained it to accept certain statements. for example when i want '#include<iostream.h>'. i say 'pound-include-i-o-stream' and it knowns i want '#include<iostream.h>'. 'see-out' and it prints 'cout<<'. i'll say 'get-dialog-item' and it prints 'GetDlgItem('. 'semicolon' and i get a 'semicolon and the cursor goes to the next line'. it took some time but i was bored when i did it.

I had Dragon Dictate, spent hours trying to train it. It couldn't
even get "the" right! WTF. It's quicker to type whatever you're
composing than to use any of those speech processors.
