    Creating a web page.............

    Hi,

My uncle is starting a business, and he wants me to create the web page for his business for him. BUt i only had experience for creating personal web pages.

What should i do to register for a domain name ( like www.something.com ) and generally how much does it cost?

How come there are so many sites for domain name registering?

After i buy a domain name, how can i link it to my computer so people can visit the web pages?

Any other good web server programs other than apache?

    thnx thnx

I used LowCostDomains to register my site. It cost about $20-$30 to register, then you have to pay hosting costs every month (I paid $10 a month when I had my site).

Based on what you just said, I don't think you are up to the task of administering a substantial business web page. There is a LOT more to it than just writing toy html. You need to procure a domain name, set up a server, etc.

Most good ISP will offer business packages where they host and help with business pages. You might wanna look into this.

But if you wanna take a crack at it, you are going to need to invest in a server and get a dedicated internet connection to it. I would recommend Linux/Apache, but where are other options. Microsoft's version is called IIS, I think. you will also need to design it. You will probably want to do this on a Windows box running FrontPage 2k or XP.

I already hav cable connection so thats no problem.

I want to store the web pages on my own computer and not want to host it anywhere else. So does apache help me link my computer to the domain name i registered?

Trying to use a home computer as a web server is usually a very, VERY bad idea. But yeah, Apache is what you are looking for.

If your Uncle wants internet shopping he'll need his own server. Learn ASP or PHP or something like that. You might have to do a little more than a personal web page would require.

If the site is going to have more than a few people on it at a time, then using just a cable connection will make it very slow. I would recommend 34sp.com for a low-cost host. I get an average of 22 hits a day on my site, and I didn't even reach half the monthly bandwith (400MB to start, you can always upgrade). It may not seem like much, but you should ask yourself if you really need a more.

My uncle is starting a small business and wants to minimise the cost as much as possible.

Cable doens't support more than a few ppl at a time? Can't be that slow can it?...........i'm not sure

On the web site, he doesn't need internet shopping. The site would only contains details of the company and its services, and all contact details.

I want to store web pages on our own computers because uncle wants to avoid money transactions over the net. And we hav total control over the web server.

    Depends on what you get.
Most home packages have thier upload speed capped at 14k. That would only support a few users, but most buisness plans will have much faster upload speeds.
If you own a piece of land and there is an volcano on it and it ruins a
nearby town, do you have to pay for the property damage?
