    moral dilemma

    maybe it's just me...

i know i'll get a biased answer at cprogramming.com, but here goes...

do you find that people are much angrier/worried about content? like the trix-christ thread. everyone gets riled when they see something that's demeaning to christ. when i saw that cartoon i immediately saw satire against the christian right. (for the record i thought the snickers ad was the snickers company making money off of mocking christ)

another thing is flag burning. i have never seen the flag as a supreme symbol. burning the flag is a symbol of disrespect toward the country, as showing it is a symbol of respect. no one's outrage over the treatment of a flag is worth sacrificing the right to burn it. if i hate america, i should be able to say it. (for the record, i don't)

another thing is pornography. why are groups trying to rid the world of it? efforts would be better spent convincing people to turn away from it. who cares if children see it?(not talking about child pornography, which i'm against.) i respect the first amendment above petty bickering from people who are for or against something. no one is being hurt by speech and expression.

so basicly, i'm looking for your opinion. would the world be better off if there was no flag burning, no demeaning pictures of christ, or pornography(please answer this one seriously)?

Then... ... what would we argue about? The GD board would be... empty!

Seriously tho, to keep it pithy: No.

Different people have different opinions. One persons opinions are no more right than anothers, and as long as that persons opinions dont cause harm or restrict another person, then nobody has the right to prohibit them. We're all individuals. I might not like how some turn out, but i wouldnt change it for anything.

lol, i put pornography, jesus christ, and flag burning in one topic and all i get is one reply?

it's one thing to express your opinion. i hate it when others try to make laws which please a small interest group, and when the media and the general population are too apathetic to care.

If people want to burn the flag, that should be their right, but they would be shunned by most of Americal society.
I'm an atheist, so I could say that a picture of christ is offending, so people should be able to do whatever they want to make fun of the christian religion. Religion is stupid anyway.
    Leave porno alone!

Not everybody cares about flag burning.
Most Australian's hate our flag, but can't ever seem to come up with a better one.
So go ahead burn it, I'll even lend you my lighter.

As lightatdawn said, everyone has his/her own opinion about things. I think that everyones opinion should be respected, but note that having an opinion is different from executing ideas. In Europe, I guess also outside of Europe, there are a lot of people who have the opinion that people of certain races, religions etc. are inferior to to their own race, religion, etc. I absolutely don't agree with that opinion, to me no one is inferior or superior to another, but I accept that those people have their opinions. But I will never accept that they will execute their ideas. So I will never accept a government creating laws in which people of certain races or religions are treated as inferior people. Also I will not accept that someone excludes another one from participating in something because of race or religion.

IMHO using religious figures wether Christian or others for purposes like ads shouldn't be allowed. It only results in controversies.

Flagburning its just a waste of time, who actually cares if you burn some countries flag. I think its stupid.

Pornography... i dont think it can be removed esp with keeping the internet in mind and then there is prostitution which is legal in some countries.

    just my opinion.

Sorry, I don't see the reasoning here... are you saying we should be keeping it just for the reason that it is legal somewhere? My point is, if something is to be judged, it shouldn't be based on the fact like: "Oh, well, it's perfectly legal ______, so let's keep it..." If something is evil and wrong (my opinion of pornography), then it is evil and wrong, not 'OK' because someone says it's OK...

Sorry, I don't know what I'm trying to say here, it made perfect sense just now
This is my signature. Remind me to change it.

    >another thing is pornography.

If we were meant to run around naked, we would have been born naked.

    Oh, wait...

Where do you draw the line between nudity and pornography ? And why should either one be illegal ( assuming creators and viewers weren't forced to be part of it ) ? Because it shows sex ? Is sex illegal ? Is showing a legal act illegal ? Why ? Does it have a reason ?

    >Religion is stupid anyway.

You are very off base on that. It has been proven that religion is a smart, good thing to have in a society. I'm an aetheist also because i don't like wasting my time on soemthing that has no pay-offs for me, not because Christianity is "stupid". I think you are being rather ignorant in saying that. I feel that if people are strengthened by their religion, it's a good thing and they have every right to follow their religion. No use in taking away or demaening something that helps us for the most part.

Exactly. Me being a Jedi knight, I am very offended by Star Wars ads (and Ja Ja Binks or whatever its name was).

    >>Because it shows sex ? Is sex illegal ? Is showing a legal act illegal ? Why ? Does it have a reason ?

In Aust X rated movies are illegal. Yet you can go to a video store (or just turn on your TV) and hire a movie showing multiple deaths / murders.

So an illegal act is legal to see but ....

    Well, from the right...

People that use images of Jesus Christ for their own purposes that distract worship from the holy mother Church are idolators and sinners.

I cannot speak for every nation, but here in America I would personally punch every flag burning pothead ***got in the teeth, if I had the time. People that hide behind the constitution that they bear no allegiance to should be shipped off to somalia for a year, then offered the choice to return to America and be an American or to stay where they are.

As far as pornography versus nudity, the difference is simple. Images considered nudes are artistic. Images considered pornography are meant to be lusted upon. Matthew 4:28 tells us that "whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart."

imperito, dollars to doughnuts you get flamed before this post is deleted.

    . . . pothead f**got . . . what would your mother say!

if i remember my pascal "man on earth is likened to a man lifted from his cozy bed and set alone on a cold deserted island with no hope of escape"

our world is such a godaweful miserable place that we really have no other choice than to infuse these muted topics with our own tepid responses (save imperito's ) and then tap away at our keyboards chasing dollars around the screen trying to find our own versions of happiness, our ideal world. i don't think i could blame or pass judgment on anybody's decision regarding the poster's offered topics (though i'd pause at the atheists--mankind's greatest minds have all come to terms with god); even the worst mother-rapers of us around are faced with the need to reconcile our ideal world with the one we're faced with in every waking moment. that we made it to the next day is proof enough that our actions should be granted at least an iota of respect and thought by others (save imperito--hehe, sorry to poke fun at you)

    anyway . . . where's my gun, i'm gonna get me some pothead f**gots

Did Matthew do anything else then writing his stuff ? He should have went out and looked for a woman himself. A man lusting for a women is doing his evolutionary job. If it weren't this way, mankind would be extinct by now.

    >So every man on the planet is going to hell?

Yes, obviously. Biology sends us directly to hell. I wonder what Matthew has to tell us about women.
