Go buy a book and read them - look for D&D, Vampire: the Masquerade, GURPS, or maybe Legend of the Five Rings.
FF 1&2 were quite cool... played them on my trusty b/w Gameboy

Then what would you call it? I think it is definitely a role playing game. You gain levels, spells, etc. Every aspect of the game is role playing. It is definitely not a strategy game. A strategy game is like Legend of Zelda.
It is not an action game. An action game would be like Metroid. It is not a sim. A sim (aka FPS) would be like Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Flight Simulator, etc.
So what would you call it? I think it falls 100% under the role playing game category.
Sorry, I'm gonna stick to my guns - they're not open-ended enough, by my definition... Definitely more of an RPG than Zelda... I'd call them adventure games (same place I'd put Gabriel Knight)
