Hi,
I have heard something called x86 or 80x86. I know it's hardware-related, or even a specific type of hardware right? How many hardware types are there? How are they named ( what do their names mean ) ?
thnx

x86 is the intel family of processors
eg
286
386
486
586...
AMD Athlons are very similar, and so x86 programs can run on Athlons.
thnx
Can anyone any other ones ? I heard something called 'alpha'..
>How many hardware types are there?
Too many to sum up. Each day technicians create new types of hardware. It also depends on what you call hardware. A microprocessor can be seen as a type of hardware, also a piece of memory and an I/O module can be called types of hardware. Putting them together with som other hardware results in a new type of hardware: a computersystem.

I am using an Alpha system, (actually more than one, each machine has 2 CPU's and I have several of them in an OpenVMS cluster). The Alpha was a range of 64 bit chips made by DEC. When DEC was bought out by Compaq, they committed the great sin of killing the chip. They are moving the 64 bit systems over to the Itanium processors.
