Linux has many components, windows is all-in-one?

    Hi,

You know how Linux is made up of many bits and componets combined together to make it a full operating system. Such items include for example, file managers, window managers, GUI environments....shell prompt...etc

    But windows has it all-in-one.

Am i getting this idea right?

    Yes, windows is not modular.

But it is not all in one, because Linux has more packages than windows contains.

What is the meaning behind this question?
Hope you don't mind my bad english, I'm Austrian!

He's trying to find a flaw in Linux, so he can get a gold star from Microsoft.

I'm not quite sure, but I guess windows has a monolithic kernel and linux has a microkernel...big whoop. Doesn't mean anything about the OS.

A full operating system? According to your list of components, I guess you don't know what an operating system really is. Don't you like modular software? I think the reason that Windows has so much problems is that it isn't modular.

Linux is monolithic as well in terms of kernel design. He was more referring to the application level, where you have pretty much one of everything in windows (one type of command line shell, one window manager intergrated with the OS, etc). More of an observation than a flaw.

    >>I guess you don't know what an operating system really is

You're right, I'm programming in the dark here...my OS is a random smattering of things that I'm going to label an OS and see if people notice. Perceptive! See, all of those components will be built into the OS...not spread apart.

    >>Don't you like modular software?

I really don't care either way...why would I? Maybe a support file here and three is a good thing, but making each part modular is kinda overdoing it.

    >>Linux is monolithic

Now that I think about it, I read an old UseNet thing once where linus torvalds said that himself...

    Thnx

Yes my queestion is more of an observation and i just want to make sure that my idea is right. And i agree that there are much more apps or 'packages' in linux than in windows. But i still like the GUI of winxp, nothing can beat it at the moment except osX

I dunno.. I think this GUI is pretty visually appealing.
