Hmm...Easier said than done...Although I think I might be able to do it. If I can survive 7 days of vacation without internet, it's only four times more than that.
Not using a computer ... Definitly no.
Without the Internet isn't too bad unless you have no computer books.
I think I went about a month and a half without internet this past summer.
If you don't pay your electric bill it's not that hard at all.
There is no way... ;)
When you're stuck with a 233 mhz pile of crap with a 28.8 modem, it's real easy. But when you get a 1ghz computer and DSL, it's a little harder, although still feasible.
I've done it before. Computers offer no necessities.
Tim, what is your ideal world? Would there be suffering?
I could do it, it would give me plenty of time to catch up on all of those books that I want to read but never seem to get around to.

I disagree... computers DO offer necessities to a degree.. for me it's a means of communication AND a means of getting work done.... and work means food on the table...Quote:

No, why would you assume that? My sig? If that's where you got it from, let me justify myself. I am an atheist. That does not mean I am immoral or malevolent. I just believe that "God" is something made up by people a long time ago. I have plenty of evidence to support my belief, while religion is mainly based on brainwashing and blind faith. Don't judge people on their religion or lack thereof. Besides my non-existant belief in God, I am probably just as normal as you.Quote:

It is definately possible. What do you people think books are for?
Yes, I derrived my question from your signature.
I was not attacking your beliefs; I was questioning a single quote because there is a great deal of interesting philosophical debate about suffering. I wasn't making an assumption about your beliefs with regards to suffering; I was only questioning your to probe the philosophical implications of suffering. Your religious beliefs are only interesting as they affect your response.
What do you mean?Quote:

And, I actaully want to change my answer. There would be a little suffering, because without suffering, I believe that we do not appreciate happiness or non-suffering (I don't know how to term that phrase).
"What do you mean?"
Your religious beliefs only interest me because I am interested in what sort of response you give based on them. Which is to say, your beliefs wouldn't be interesting if I weren't asking you the question.
What interested me regarding the idea of suffering is that it seems people often think the world needs some suffering to allow the appreciation of pleasure, which struck my as an interesting response to your signature's quote, if you're willing to agree that evil is that which causes suffering (there may be other definitions of evil, but many people seem to define evil in terms of causing harm).
And one more thought to consider, if you're in the philosophical mood: is the believe in the necessity of suffering a product of relativistic thinking? Plato, for example, argued that only the base emotions required opposite extremes for pleasure and that philosophical thought could produce pleasure without pain.
Look at the bias; he was a philosopher. Not all people like that stuff.Quote:
philosophical thought could produce pleasure without pain.
Well, that's dodging the question. I gave Plato only as an example of one person who didn't believe suffering was necessary.
Well, it's not a black and white question, and maybe pleasure can be acheived without pain. But I have an example for you. Find a food you don't like very much. Eat it when you are not hungry, then try it again when you are really hungry. When do you enjoy it more? Damn, I don't like to say this, but maybe the greater the suffering, the greater the pleasure. And IF that is true, (I hope it's not) I guess heaven, if there is one, would have to have suffering. And it would also disprove the idea of utopia. And what about if you really gotta take a ........... That's a great feeling when u get it out, it's a relief. I doubt it would feel good if you didn't feel uncomfortable before u go, but I can't prove that. Man I'm rambling a lot so I'll shut up now.
Yes but the Idea of heaven is to have that relief in a constant state. one that doesn't require/need pain.
Oh also tim, on your sig, the Bible describes the earth as a sphere, last time I checked, that isn't flat
A month with out internet access is like a life without sex.
Fine, fine, I don't know what the Bible says, and I won't bother to read it, so try to argue with this sig.
I don't know... if I really HAD to I probably could... but there's things I have to do online all the time, email, even online HW for a class... Imagine taking an online class without using the web... now that's an idea!
I guess I can do that but it might be tough...
Will someone shoot this thread already?
I can only do it if i'm forced to.
