Portable Music Player

Hi,

I want to get myself an MP3 player. Do any of you have suggestions? My requirements:

1) Must be possible to manage the music from Linux.
2) Must be able to play Ogg Vorbis.
3) Small.

Something like a Vorbis-playing iPod Shuffle would be great.

As a developer, I'd probably suit you to have some sort of Open-Source firmware

Rockbox is awesome, I have a Toshiba Gigabeat F (a few years old), and it's better than my brother's -- who has a later model Gigabeat S (which rockbox hasn't been ported to yet).

That sounds interesting. I'll give it a look.

I bought an iRiver T60 specifically for its Vorbis-playing capabilities and it's pretty good. Tend to be expensive for what they are though.

iPod nano + RockBox is what i use, though i like the original ipod software because i generally play mp3s.

I'd keep an eye on the Sansa Clip. It doesn't play Ogg but If you check out the sansa updates on the forum they have that in mind for future firmware updates. It's the best sounding of small and medium sized players out there with flash, beats ipod in gb/$ and quality and usability (comparing it to the ipod nano that is)

The iriver clix is also a good one I hear, has great sound but is a little pricy compared to many other flash based players

iPod nano Gen 2+ is not supported by the projects to replace the firmware on them, just something to keep in mind.

XMPlay supports ogg and alot more, and is quite small. It's not a linux app though. (or is that not what you meant?)

Heh. It used to be, when somebody talked about wanting a "portable music player," it meant they wanted something that would fit into their pocket

I want something that fits in my pocket. Just so I can listen to music while jogging.

Don't try that with the iPod headphones by the way -- your sweat will short it out and you'll get shocked in your ears. That sucked.

Err... freak accident coupled with a faulty product?

Because that sure never happened to me and I pretty much have the thing glued to my belly when doing my weekend bicycle rides.

The iPod headphones are trash anyway, they have a bad shape and sound terrible. Any in-ear headphone set for around 20$ would be a significant improvement...
