a question - i see that something under "file sharing" has been censored above. what exactly is the limitation involved here? there are many ftp client/servers above, and they are extremely popular for "illegal" usage. other file sharing applications can be used for "legal" purposes as well. for instance, dc++ (available on sourceforge) is an extremely useful piece of software which one can use to distribute both legal and illegal files.

the question is, do you suppress the file sharing link because it MAY be used to spread illegal files? (in which case, you should also remove ftp servers and possibly http servers). or did you suppress is because it was called LEETHAXSOFTSHARE (or kazaa)?

addendum:
then again, it may be the case that you are censoring "active" file sharing software, wherein you just enter in a search key and then lists of results are returned (ex kazaa, napster). under this type of censorship, ftp servers are cool because you must know their address before using them. in this case you should block links to google.com, which is a website allowing one to enter a search string and find potentially dangerous and illegal information in the form of html and other files.

pps:

the rule cited:
6. Messages relating to cracking, (erroneously called "hacking" by many), copyright violations, or other illegal activities will be deleted.

all i'm saying is that use file sharing program is not copyright violation or an illegal activity. i can jump on google and find keys for windows xp at this moment, but it is not censored.

major_small
05-18-2004, 04:22 PM
I was going to debate that as well, because file sharing (and the utilities involved) is not, in itself, illegal... legally, there's nothing that can be done if the software is posted here under a proper license, but then again if the mods/supermods/admins/etc. don't want it there, there's nothing we can do about it, and it is covered under rule 6...

caroundw5h
05-18-2004, 04:28 PM
I didn't even notice that till you guys said something. I for one have to say I think its ridiculous that it is censored and I think ggs already made all the relevant points. ALL OF HIS POINTS WERE GOOD.
It amazes how much ppl who are supposed to be logical and scientific still don't employ it and allow emotion to rule. sad. Sad, very sad. The mod suppressing that info - when like ggs said there are even more dangerous tools available that will enable you to do even more damage - is, I don't even know how to articulate it. Sad. open sourced, closed mouths.

sad.

maybe ggs, its cause we are from canada and anything goes here. we employ common sense without the need for redundant bureaucracy and red tape.

ggs
05-18-2004, 04:38 PM
i wouldn't agree that we are free from red tape :(

but really that's offtopic, i just await final judgement from mods

GNU Emacs (http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/emacs.html): A real mans editor. Has more features than any other editor, ever.
Textpad ("http://www.textpad.com): For people wanting better syntax highlighting and space orientation than emacs minus the 9593475389475210395 features Emacs provides.
Open Watcom (http://www.openwatcom.org): The best free and open source compiler there is. Don't dispute it, it just is, okay?
PHP Designer 2005 (http://www.mpsoftware.dk/phpdesigner.php): Maybe the best free PHP editor I've ever seen (note: I've never used Zend Studio.)
Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net): The bittorrent client.
All the software on sysinternals.com (http://www.sysinternals.com): Written by Mark Russinovich, some of the best Windows tools on the market.
STunnel (http://stunnel.sourceforge.net): SSL passthrough layer, you can pass everything you want through Stunnel to get an SSL encrypted session.

More software I have found in my... Journeys (note a lot of these I have known about for quite some time, I just forgot about them):

Code::Blocks (http://www.codeblocks.org/): Pretty nice development environment.
LePutty (http://leputty.sourceforge.net/): Sweet Windows SSH client.
OpenPERL IDE (http://open-perl-ide.sourceforge.net/): Nice nice PERL environment. Similar to PHP Coder Pro.
PHP Coder Pro (http://www.phpide.com/programs.php): Great PHP environment.
LispWorks (http://www.lispworks.com/): Cool environment for ANSI Common Lisp.
foobar2000 (http://www.foobar2000.com): Amazing windows media player.
Snort IDS (http://www.snort.org): Only one of the best open source and free IDSs available for a variety of platforms.
CScope (http://cscope.sourceforge.net/): A freakin' sweet C tool for going through source trees. It has a variety of functions and is used by many people (specifically, auditors of source code) on a frequent basis. It can handle the source code for an entire operating system with ease.
Exuberant Ctags (http://ctags.sourceforge.net/): Creates .tag files (which are supported by a wide variety of editors like VIM and Emacs) of a source code file, has support for a multitude of languages like Ruby, C, Perl, and Assembly, et cetera (http://ctags.sourceforge.net/languages.html).
SVN (http://subversion.tigris.org/): Absolutely marvelous source code versioning system. Many people rate it better than CVS.
Ethereal (http://www.ethereal.com/): THE network analyzer. Even used by Cisco. It auto analyzes packets for you and all that fancy jazz, although if you want to learn from the bottom-up, stay away from ethereal for a while.
NetCat (http://www.vulnwatch.org/netcat/): The Hackers Swiss Army Knife. Comes for NT and regular Unix variants. It can be used for a great deal of purposes, from back doors to saving an entire harddrive (my friend broke a hdd, so he inserted a livecd (german cd INSERT), made an ISO of the harddrive, and streamed it to his laptop with netcat. Not bad eh?)
NASM (http://nasm.sourceforge.net): Only one of the best x86 assemblers out there! Free, open source, easy to use and is quite well known among unix assembly programmers. Intel syntax is used with it.
Nmap (http://www.insecure.org/nmap): the absolute best port scanner out there! Don't let it fool you however, it has an extrodinary amount of features, from stealth scanning (which snort can pick up ;>) all the way to reading TCP timestamps in packets to detect uptime!
PKCrack (http://www.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/~conrad/krypto/pkcrack.html): You know those passworded archive files? Well, if you have a copy of a file from the archive, PKCrack is the tool to break into that mofo. Providing you have a copy of a file inside the archive, PKcrack can break an archive into a decrypted form in roughtly 10 minutes or so (it took about 10 minutes for me to break one archive as a challenge, some people tried bruting the same zip and their estimated time of accomplishment was something like 4 million years.)
Digital mars C/C++ compiler (http://www.digitalmars.com): The fastest C/C++ compiler I've ever seen, it is extremely lightweight and comes in a command line form. Several tools are included. Beware however, Digital mars does not come with everything that would come with Visual C++ 7. If you want more support for libraries, you have to manually install them.
Resource Hacker (http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/): If you need to modify resources on windows (i.e. dialogs,) well, look no further.
SPIKE (http://www.immunitysec.com/resources-freesoftware.shtml) (fuzzer): When people need to know if their clients and servers are secure or not, they turn to the SPIKE. Free and open source, it is definately a powerful auditing tool. The magic of a fuzzer like SPIKE has to be seen before it can be believed, it's hard to really just explain it.
IRSSI (http://www.irssi.org): The best IRC client ever. It is only supported on linux and there are some unofficial windows builds, but it is extremely powerful and lightweight and works on almost every version of linux that has curses support. I only run windows, but I use SSH accounts just so I can use IRSSI. Yeah, I like it that much.
RadASM (http://radasm.visualassembler.com/): Great free studio for a lot of assemblers (fasm, nasm, tasm, masm, etc. etc..)
Plone (http://www.plone.org): A powerful and functional CMS written in Python. It requires the Zope framework. The easy thing about it is this: all you need is to set up Zope (you need to configure almost nothing) and then install Plone. That simple - it's installed. Highly customizable and very secure. Very recommended.
Ruby on Rails (http://rubyonrails.org): Ruby on Rails (or RoR) is a framework written in Ruby for developing web applications with more joy and fun. And it does this well.
Any piece of software by 37signals (http://www.37signals.com) is good if you ask me. Their whole philosophy is software is too complex, so they make more stuff, to do less, on purpose. Personally, I like it. Doesn't matter if you've never heard of them - they're still awesome.
Frostwire (http://www.frostwire.com): basically it's exactly like Limewire, but it doesn't filter your results for things like LimeWire is starting to do.
OllyDBG (http://www.ollydbg.de): Undoubtly the best user mode debugger there is for Windows! It lacks the 'oompf' of SoftICE, and it doesn't have as many amazing disassembly features as IDA Pro, but it definately is an extremely powerful user mode debugger with a wide amount of features and some cool plugins.

OMFG ALMOST FORGOTTEN:
Tor (http://tor.eff.org): Tor is absolutely the best anonymity network currently available. All traffic to and fro when using Tor is theoretically 100% anonymous because of Onion Routing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onion_Routing). Tor keeps no logs and (as much as a lot of conspiracy theorists would like to disagree) is not "one big honeypot for catching hackers." Open source, free, and works like a regular SOCKS5 proxy (which a lot of applications these days offer in their configurations, example: GAIM.) The hit in connection speed is noticable, but it is worth it if you want anonymity.

Best Text Editor... ever...
http://www.crimsoneditor.com

It has support for nearly every programming/web/scripting language you could think of
(Syntax colors and spacing)

asm, c/c++, java, php, html, batch files, unrealscript, fortran, basic, z80 asm, all kinds of crap.

You can also create your own.
I prefer Notepad++, because it is CLEAN. Crimson Editor wastes so much room on the screen for useless things.

I don't really see the point of encrypting things on my own computer. It is a lot of mess and is not very useful.

Depends on your computer... I don't encrypt anything on my desktop, but I do encrypt some stuff on my laptop. Because my laptop is like 100 times more likely to get stolen.

Here is some software that I use at the moment, just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Note: everything mentioned here is free software; most of it under the GNU GPL (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html), most of the rest under even less restrictive licenses, and all of it meets the Debian Free Software Guidelines (http://www.debian.org/social_contract) and thus likely also falls under the Open Source Definition (http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition.php).

If you haven't already, you should try make and a debugger. They're absolutely essential. The names vary depending on what compiler you are using, but for GCC/g++, it's "make" and "gdb" (the GNU Debugger).

Some general programming software that I use under Linux (but works on other platforms unless otherwise noted).

Valgrind (valgrind.org): an excellent tool for detecting memory leaks, buffer overruns, and other errors of the sort. (Linux only.)
Kate (kate.kde.org), KDevelop (kdevelop.org): Very nice IDEs for KDE (specifically, Qt, which means you could probably run them under Windows as well).
Doxygen (doxygen.org): takes your source code and generates documentation. Works best if you write special Doxygen comments, but you can use any source code written in C, C++, or Java (and maybe other languages as well).

I know it has already been mentioned, but version control systems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revision_control) are essential. Here are some of them, as well as related programs.

Concurrent Versions System (CVS) (cvshome.org): once (and possibly still) the most widely-used version control system. It's basically a front end to RCS (http://www.gnu.org/software/rcs/) that supports multiple files.
Subversion (SVN) (subversion.tigris.org): a very nice version control system that supposively fixes some of CVS's issues. For example, versions are project-wide, so you don't have to compile main.c version 1.4 with network.c version 1.7.
Kompare (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kompare): the nicest (graphically) diff program I've ever come across. Check out the screenshot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Kompare.png) in Wikipedia and you'll see what I mean.
kdesvn (http://kdesvn.alwins-world.de/): the graphical client for subversion that I use, based on RapidSVN (rapidsvn.tigris.org), but there are many of them out there. Makes using a version control system easier.

Do free libraries count? If so, some SDL ones, which are all written in C and thus work with C natively and are easy to use in C++:

SDL (libsdl.org): a portable, cross-platform graphics and sound and I/O library. It contains all you need to write a graphics application such as a game, and your resulting program runs almost anywhere, from Windows 98 to 64-bit Linux to Mac OS X. (Believe me, I've tried it on all three.)
SDL libraries list (http://libsdl.org/libraries.php?order=name&category=-1&completed=0&os=-1&match_name=&perpage=-1): a huge list of libraries compatible with the SDL. The search option only lets you search titles, however, so I find it's best to display all results (which my link does) and use your browser's search feature.
SDL_image (http://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_image): with this, you can open images in almost any format. Let's see; it supports BMP, GIF, JPEG, LBM, PCX, PNG, PNM, TGA, TIFF, XCF, XPM, and XV. It's really easy to use, too. You just call IMG_Load(filename), and it figures out the type of the file etc.
SDL_ttf (http://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_ttf): TrueType fonts for the SDL. You can load ordinary fonts like FreeMono.ttf (Linux) or Courier New (Windows). The resulting text looks much better than bitmap fonts. It's a bit difficult to use, but the result is worth it.
SDL_gfx (http://www.ferzkopp.net/joomla/content/view/19/14/): support for drawing graphics primitives such as: lines, circles, polygons, ellipses, pies, in normal, anti-aliased (smoothed), and filled modes (and sometimes anti-aliased filled, too). Also supports image rotating and scaling or zooming. It also has other features that I've never figured out.

I can't recommend any particular GUI library for the SDL, because I like to write my own. But there are many. Search the libraries list above for a few. Or see:

The GUI Toolkit (http://www.free-soft.org/guitool/): a very comprehensive list of GUI libraries. It's tough to read, but you probably won't find a more complete list anywhere:

Hmm, Meld's directory diff (http://meld.sourceforge.net/meld_dir4.png) also looks pretty nice. I might have a look at it. :)

Firebird is really just an old name for Firefox, as far as I can tell. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Firefox
The Firefox project has undergone several name changes. Originally titled Phoenix, it was renamed because of trademark issues with Phoenix Technologies. The replacement name, Firebird, provoked an intense response from the Firebird free database software project.[8][9][10] In response, the Mozilla Foundation stated that the browser should always bear the name Mozilla Firebird to avoid confusion with the database software. Continuing pressure from the database server's development community forced another change; on February 9, 2004, Mozilla Firebird became Mozilla Firefox,[11] often referred to as simply Firefox and Mozilla prefers it be abbreviated as Fx or fx.[12]
Everywhere there are references to firebird (http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/linux/technologist/archives/mozilla-firebird-web-browser-212), they just turn out to be references to Firefox . . . . I'm pretty sure that the Mozilla web browser briefly became Firebird and then was renamed to Firefox. (I have old versions of this web browser that call themselves "Mozilla Web Browser" or some such, no "fire" anywhere.)

In short: try Firefox. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

I had completely forgotten that I had posted in this thread, believe it or not. :) Anyway, here are some other programs that I'm using at the moment:

Software that came with GCC that you never knew you had:

gprof (http://www.cs.utah.edu/dept/old/texinfo/as/gprof_toc.html) (part of GCC): the GNU profiler. It's a very nice way to figure out what really needs optimising, though I can't get it to work very well for SDL programs . . . SDL_BlitSurface() takes 100% of the time, apparently. :)
gcov (http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Gcov.html) (also part of GCC): a program to test code coverage. It lets you figure out what really gets executed, and what doesn't, and how often.

Also: Linux. Get Linux and you'll get so much free software you can do almost anything . . . I use Debian, but that's just because I like its package management system. ;)
