Mandrake 9.0 - Hangs at startup

My friend installed Mandrake 9.0, and when it boots up it just seems to lag at the screen, with that watch (timer in windows). He can get into linux with failsafe mode. I never encountered a problem like that with 8.1, so I dont know what the prob is.

Any suggestions?

I remebered about the command startx, and I told him to get in under failsafe mode, however, when he types it, a red screen comes up and it lags again.

to start the X server.
startx

if it happens some error, maybe his xf86config file isnt well configurated, try using this command, xf86config, and answer to the questions, the program will create a correct config file.
