IE problems

About 3 weeks ago, for some odd reason (I have no clue why), Internet Explorer on my computer decided to crash. So every time I try to open IE it gives me an error message.

At first I did not think of it as a big thing, but then as I tried to do other things it really began to annoy.

Because of the stupidity of Microsoft and their action of inter-twining the Windows OS almost completely with IE, I cannot use Windows Explorer, My Computer, the Recycle Bin, and many other things.

So for 3 weeks I basically havent been able to use anything related to IE in Windows, which is quite a lot.

A couple days ago, however, I downloaded IE6 off the net and did a complete reinstallation, hoping it would solve the problem. It, however, did not do one thing to solve the problem.

Any suggestions? (other than formatting...I cant format the drive because its the family comp and my mom would kill me if I did that...even though I see it as the only way to fix it).

hmm i'd say its been corrupted, and therefore its imo that salem has made a wonderful suggestion.

What's the error message (and full symptoms)? It might be a bad plug-in or shell extension.

If you can, just remove the windows folder, then after you've reinstalled windows go through all of your program files folder rerunning the setup program for each application which reinstalls the windows settings, etc. to make them work again even though they're already installed on your hard drive from before(update repair style).

If that won't work, Salem has made the best suggestion I'm afraid. It helps to have extra hardware.

It would help if you could tell us what the actual error message was. Maybe you have a virus or something in the registry that is corrupt. I had a friend of mine that had a corrupt registry and I was able to fix it using a registry editor and a solution we found in google groups.

I have a true story to capitolize on that. Now i can't explain HOW he did it, i honestly don't know. A buddy of mine had a win98 machine with a small HDD, like a gig or something. So anyway they have it for like a year and he tries to install tomb raider. It needs more space, so hes digging thru the c:\ drive and sees a folder called windows. For whatever reason he thought he didn't need it and it was hogging hes room, so he deletes it, not so much as a error, and installs TR fine. Then he reboots, all gone....

to this day i dunno why he was able to do it.

I couldn't be bothered to, so that's what I did. That is also why I said things like, "If you can" and then, "If that won't work" etc.

I wasn't saying it was the best solution in the world, just a solution.

Not everybody has their computer setup like you do, so yes, my solution would work, and has 1 or 2 times for me. It's better than an entire format...IF you can't be bothered to dis-infect any viruses you might have manually.

Normally, I manually remove viruses, like I did last night - in 10 minutes. Otherwise, sometimes, I just can't be bothered to do it, so windows gets "refreshed". :D

hey .. i guess you got a virus. might be "VBS_redlof" i guess. this virus could infest HTML files. that's why your desktop computer, IE, my computer .... can't work. you may try some help from http://housecall.antivirus.com for scan online, and will help you to clean the virusses for you.

doens't tell us much...you may have that virus going round, if u have norton go update it real quick and full scan.

BTW u can bypass the annoying "send report" dialog and still get the error message without it. (right click my comp if u can and go to properties. once there go to advanced and at the bottom it says "error reporting", in there uncheck it.)

The middle dialog box mentions flt.dll.....

A few searches on google links this to a piece of spyware called "Flashtrack"......and a few people seem to have problems removing it....

I found this (http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/FlashTrack.html) which discribes it a bit more......but I would say that this is just from a bit of surfing....I havent come across this before and I know little about it....but if you are feeling brave, you may wish to try and manually remove this dll.

It might not be the same thing......

I had your problem before and couldnt fix it without a full restore :(

It's quite nasty that any misbehaving component on IE (and lets face it there are so many little addins for IE - wanted or unwanted) can have such a catestrophic effect on the whole of the system....

Like I said...I'm glad I relegate all my web activity to Opera, and became more selective over what I installed on my PC....less opportunity for IE (and therefore explorer) to be exposed to all this stuff

a full restore as in formatting and then reinstalling everything or as in doing a system restore...one of the features in WinXP?

No actually I wiped it...I needed to do some stuff with the partitions, so starting again seemed like a good idea
