Hello, I am a first year college student, studying Unix for the first time. I do not have the operating system available at home, so I was wondering, is it possible to download the unix operating system, or perhaps to get a program which simulates the Unix environment under Windows? I currently use Windows 98.

And don't forget that BSD and Linux aren't actually Unix, they are Unix-like clones.

Please tell me more about telnet, and how to get the free telnet account. It seems to be the most viable option for me.

In a way this is true and wrong at the same time. Linux was in fact derived from Minix which has nothing to do with UNIX, on the code side. But BSD was derived from UNIX V6. On the other hand most of the code was rewritten in the early 90's in order to make it free, and 4.4BSD-Lite, which is the base of Free/Net/OpenBSD doesn't contain any proprietary AT&T code.
But then, I doubt any of the SysV derivatives still contains much of the original code.

Thanks for clarifying, I actually do remember something about BSD being a UNIX related somehow to Berkley...

BSD stands for berkley software development. It was a series of addations made by the computer systems research group at the university of california in berkley. THe other major version of unix is system V which decended for the versions by AT&T and UNIX System Labrotories.

At the bare minimum, you could get bochs. It comes with a disk image for DLX linux [ a very weak distribution ] but that might get you started. bochs is at http://bochs.sourceforge.net
