hey guys, i need your help about my HD space problem.

first, i realise that my computer getting a lot of problem. therefore i try to format again and install again the OS.

before gettting the installation process. it will go to the scandisk procedure. during the scandisk process, there's show a error about the FAT table. i tried to fix it and then the error was fixed.

after that, i install the OS right now. the problem is ... i realize that my drive C: space originally is 19GB, become to 2.x GB right now. so what's the problem anyway ??? is there anyway to fix it ???

format the hard drive, wipe it clean.

if that doesn't work, unmount it, and remount making sure to follow all the instructions you did originally as if you had just gotten it out of the box. That should fix it.

I'm wondering if you might have wiped out a drive overlay. Some older bioses will only access 2G without one. Check out the drive manufacturer's website, they should have the software and instructions available to download for free.

did you format it as fat 16? Fat 16 partitions only can be up to two gb, format it as fat 32 to solve the problem.

The problem is the partioning, i assume your not using XP because if u are then the only types u could use are FAT32 and NTFS, neither of which would do this.

Meaning u partioned the drive to FAT16 with a 9x o/s (assuming its windows at all).

Boot into msdos mode and run fdisk.

Select delete partion; Primary, yes to remove.

Now your back at FDISK main menu, select create, then select primary. Use maxiumum available space as it says. Boot the system into the 9x setup and allow it to format and install.

Problem solved.

yeah, i agree, this situation is partition problem. backup whole files to other storage device. delete all partition and then format it again, and then re-partition it again. and the job is done. hee...

It's obviously a partition problem, but is it because of a bios limitation, or did beely use fdisk and forget to enable large drive support?

Could be my swiss cheese memory again. I know about the fat16/fat32 2G barrier but I was thinking there was a 2G bios limit in addition to the 528M limit.

Kind of unusual for scandisk to blowup a partition too. :confused:

scandisk? yeah, there's an error msg i found and there's a "fix it" button, but then, there's a msg said that " if you fix the problem that your current drive is NTFS or xxx, this could damage your drive" ...

now i realise that the "FIX IT" situation make the space remaining display wrong. this is partition table problem.

well... my HD have been warranted and could get a new HD after 2 weeks. huh.... it's quite a long time to wait for the HD .. sigh..

but then, i just discovered that if your drive is in winXP problem, if you wish to install win98(that mean directly run though the scandisk procedure), be aware of the "FIX it" situation. this could make your partition table in trouble.....

I've used fix it many times with no problem, if i had to guess i'd say u accidentally fdisk'd it wrong or gave win98 setup the wrong partition type when asked.
