Linux? Windows Xp?

Im just wondering whats the diff between Win XP and LINUX? i mean ive used linux before, maybe when it started getting popular, but i didnt see much difference exept that i coulent open any of my windows files on it. What can you do with LINUX? is it mainly for servers what cool stuff does it have? im downloading RedHat Linux and im about to install it creating a dual boot (win XP and LINUX) i want to learn how to use linux can any one tell me what kind of stuff LINUX is better at?

Oh man i just installed RedHat Linux and what a piece of c**p it deleted windows XP and i had a bunch of errors. Please some one help me i finish instaling linux on a new partition that was created in the same Hard Drive where i had Windows XP. it didnt delete windows XP but it messed up the boot.ini from windows so the only thing that would boot was linux. So i tried to run linux but it got stuck before loading..where the white leters come up and it says in green {succeded}...or whatever the thing is that it never loaded linux and it gave me an error saying that my server X (dont know what that is) coulent load my graphical image or something so it took me to a dos-type command prompt. it asked me to log on so i logged on with my username and password but after that it just said to input commands... i tried typing help but it didnt help me with anything so i decided to reinstall windows and erase linux. someone help i spent a lot of time downloading linux from redhat and i dont want to just throw it away.

ill try reinstalling linux but i dont know what type of instalation to choose. can anyone tell me? do i pick workstation, server, etc... i just want to learn how to use linux, im installing it in my home computer so i dont need all that server stuff. and how do i get to make a dual boot system? i looked at redhat's page but their help support is really complicated and they keep on asking you to go to a page and then they get all mixed up.

Search the web for a Linux Users Group near you and see if someone there will help you install linux. Thats much easier than getting help over the internet.

You have to use the command line often in Linux - typing man will bring up the manual (not help as in MSDOS). I have a section on my site which has some good links to getting help on Linux http://cproglinks.tripod.com/linux.html - but please, go to www.linux.org before you go anywhere else - its the best place for any information (technical or otherwise).

what you should do is install XP first then boot the RH linux from CD then choose GRUB as bootloader and place it in MBR.hopefully it should work.
