mulitplayer and directPlay

I have a book on multiplayer game programming but it refers to DirectPlay all the time. Does anyone know of any good articles or places to visit to learn Linux multiplayer?

I remember reading a slashdot review on a book called "Programming Linux Games," or something like that anyway. The reviewer seemed to think it was a good book... you might want to investigate that,
