I have another problem. I upgraded my Windows Media Player recently to version 11 and lost about half my visualizations. They were the 'Ambiance', 'Plenoptic', 'Particle' and 'Spikes' sets of visualizations. I liked those and want them back. Is there any way to retrive them?

Reinstall?
Otherwise, how about scrapping WMP and go for a better player such as Zoom Player?

I was mentioning "otherwise." Windows Media Player is fat, bloated and does not even want to accept common container formats such as MP4 or MKV.
And you can't even specify aspect ratio when playing the videos without manually going into options and changing the width to which it renders (might screw up other aspect ratios).

Agreed..

This isn't a debate about which media player is the best. I looked at the instructions on how to install visualizations and it didn't help much. Is there anywhere I can get the lost visualizations on the Internet?

Where'd you originally get them from?
If they were in WMP10, install WMP10 and move them to WMP11 (install WMP10 in a sandbox if you can't install WMP10 over WMP11). However, the way visualizations work could have changed -- and that's why they're gone, because they simply won't work anymore.

The visualizations came with Windows. I had previously upgraded Media Player to version 9 and still had these visualizations. If some of the old ones don't work, why do others (Battery, Musical Colors, Bars and Waves) still work?
