want to be a Linux programmer

    Hi
I m basically windows programmer, worked always for windows platform, I m good in web based programming also. But i want to move.
I always wanted to work for linux. Its my dream to work in c or c++ under Linux platform, I want to do some Networking kinda job or some job which are real, means calling OS api or something like that.
I am not very much familiar with Linux OS but still have a kind of crush with that.

For now, I m working as a trainee completing last semester of my Course, in a s/w company.

Can any body help me to realize my dream. By sending some link where I can find job of my dream. or any valuable suggestion.

    Thanx in advance.

Well you say that you are not very familiar with the Linux OS, so before you go out looking for a job that allows you to program stuff in Linux, I suggest you familiarize yourself with Linux a bit more.

Install a flavor of Linux on your computer. Ubuntu is a widely used distribution. I like it. You can easily download it. Have some fun with it.

Set up your computer for dual-boot and try to use Linux as much as possible. Before you can program it, you must know how to use it.

Then start with fixing bugs for open-source projects. Since pretty much everything under Linux is OSS, it shouldn't be too hard to find something that interests you. This will allow you to get to know not only some Linux code, but more importantly the culture of Linux development. Knowing what to expect there is very important if you want to get along with other hackers.

You can also use vmware, I don't know how fast it is but the player is free. I've known people that use vmware off a travel drive and it works well enough for them.

And I took a class on unix programming and it's quite a great system and different way of programminging as far as scripting goes.
